Photos: Amazing transformation of three children tortured and abused in Akwa Ibom after being branded witches

Danish aid worker, Anja Ringgren Loven on Friday recalled how she and her team rescued three children four years ago.
The kids, Grace, Victoria and William, all siblings, were accused of witchcraft by their family;  tortured and abused. Read her post:
"4 years ago today I was 7 months pregnant and on a rescue mission with David Emmanuel Umem  ( picture nr. 3 )
David and I were told that 3 children had been tortured and abused and David was so determined to find the children and bring them to safety. The children were siblings, two girls and their younger brother.
I never forget that day. It was so hot and I was so heavy, but being pregnant was not an issue. I knew that David would protect me and our main focus was to save the lives of those children before it was to late.
Luckily it was never to late. 4 years ago today David saved the lives of Grace, Victoria and William.
It’s been an amazing journey to witness the incredible transformation of all three of them. I remember how scared William and Victoria were when we found them. Grace, their senior sister was more calm. I think she already knew at that time they were safe, free from torture and abuse.
Today Victoria is the strongest little girl you will ever meet. She loves to hang around the boys and she loves to jump into any fight with the boys. At one time she had managed to create her own little group of boys where she was the leader . I’m telling you, she is so intelligent and not afraid of anything. Always top of her class
Grace has stayed calm and always being so peaceful. She is very protective of Victoria and William. She is always very happy and smiling. But never be fooled of her being so calm. She is a very strong girl with a strong will and also top of her class
William was very hard to control when he was rescued. He had suffered a lot. But with our love, care and guidance he quickly became calm. Today he is the most calm of all our children. You will never find him in trouble. Always so kind and sweet. William has also been very sick due to his past and the suffering he passed through. It’s taken us many years to find out what caused his sickness. But we now know his diagnose and day by day he is getting stronger
This is what makes our work so beautiful. We save lives
Thank you David for giving me the opportunity to come a long on this meaningful journey .

PDP chairman attacks EFCC for harassing PDP states...says the commission now APC tool for 2019

PDP chairman attacks EFCC for harassing PDP states...says the commission now APC tool for 2019

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus has berated the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EfCC for their unconcealed bias in their execution of the anti corruption war in the country.

Prince Secondus said that the recent arrest and harassment of contractors handling projects in only PDP states has clearly exposed the anti graft agency as doing the bidding of the ruling party ahead of 2019.

The PDP leader said in a statement from his media office and signed by his media adviser Ike Abonyi that the EFCC has deployed its operatives to intimidate and harass contractors handling various projects in some PDP states with the motive of frustrating their project goals which have visibly placed them far ahead of the colleagues in APC states.

Prince Secondus expressed regrets that the Commission has remained beclouded in their bias and has refused to heed the advisories from well meaning Nigerians and international watchers including the recent one from the British High Commissioner to Nigeria Mr. Paul Arkwright for them not to take sides with any political party ahead of the 2019 general election.
According to the High Commissioner, "INEC and EFCC should be there to preserve the integrity of the political process, including taking investigations without prejudice on one side or the other"
PDP boss noted that the Commission rather than listen to such counsel, has instead made themselves a willing tool to assist the drowning APC ahead of 2019 general elections.
Rather than encourage states who are seriously involved in the delivery of democracy dividend to their people, the envious ruling APC has been conniving with the relevant agencies to be harassing contractors ostensibly to frustrate and slow them down in their development strides.
"Contractors in Taraba and Rivers states as well as other PDP states are being harassed by EFCC operatives and are being arm twisted to implicate PDp leaders"
" Intelligence is available to the party that the ruling party and the federal government have resolved to ensure that PDP states are permanently put on their toes so as not to get their bearing ahead of 2019.
It would be clear to the world and discerning minds that PDP governors are doing fantastic jobs executing projects that touch the lives of their people unlike their APC counterparts
In some states like Taraba where projects have been halted as a result of EFCC meddlesomeness, the unemployment situation has worsened.
Prince Secondus reiterated the position of the PDP that corruption should be confronted frontally in our system but warned that meaningful result would never be achieved in this regard in an atmosphere of bias and double standards from anti corruption agencies.
Secondus regretted that the anti graft agencies which was indeed set up by the PDP administration to tackle the corruption vice in our system independent of the ruling government has made themselves a willing tool in the hands of the APC"
He charged PDP state governors to remain undaunted and refuse to be intimidated in the service of their people.
Finally, Prince Secondus called on the international communities to note the growing impunity where anti graft agencies now usurp the over sight functions of the state Houses of Assembly.

Cattle custlers kill at least 10 people In fresh attacks in Zamfara State

Cattle custlers kill at least 10 people? In fresh attacks in Zamfara State

At least 10 people were killed in raids by suspected cattle rustlers on four remote villages in Zamfara State.

Residents of the affected community said the armed bandits stormed the villages in Birnin Magaji area of Zamfara state, in an apparent reprisal attack after local militia killed one of their numbers.
Police spokesperson, Mohammed Shehu told AFP that, “10 people were killed by the bandits. From our reports, the attackers fled to the Rugu forest in neighbouring Katsina state. We lost 26 people in the attacks on Dutsin Wake, Oho, Badambaji and Kabingiro (villages),” said Dantani Bube, who lives in Dutsin Wake.
Seventeen were killed in Dutsin Wake, seven in Oho and one each in Badambaji and Kabingiro, another resident, Lawwali Maishanu, told AFP by telephone from the area.  Maishanu said local militia had earlier killed a suspected bandit at a market. Bandits then demanded the civilian vigilantes hand over those responsible, but they refused.

Bube and Maishanu said the gang then traced the militia members suspected of the killing to the four villages. Zamfara has for several years been gripped by violence from armed gangs of cattle rustlers who have targeted herding and farming communities. Cattle have been stolen and residents who resist them killed.

This has led to villagers forming civilian militia groups as protection. But they, too, have been accused of abuses and killings of suspected thieves, leading to tit-for-tat attacks. On June 2, cattle thieves killed 23 people in the village of Zanoka after a battle with militia members who prevented them from stealing cattle.  In recent years the gangs have added kidnapping for ransom to the criminal activities across Zamfara and neighbouring Kaduna and Katsina states.

"I know that he will come and finish me off"- South African woman in hiding after lover who stabbed her is set free

"I know that he will come and finish me off"- South African woman in hiding after lover who stabbed her is set free

A South African woman, Sonto Radebe, who lost vision in one eye after she was stabbed by her ex-boyfriend fears she could soon become a statistic in the growing number of women who are killed by their lovers after her attacker was released.

Radebe, 37, had to flee her home and is now living in hiding with relatives.
Radebe was allegedly attacked by her ex-lover, who refused to accept that she had ended their relationship. She reported the man, who is on parole for killing his baby mama, after the incident.

She had opened cases of rape, assault and attempted murder against the man, but to her surprise, she learnt from the investigating officer that the case against him had been withdrawn.
"I know that he will come and finish me off," she told Sowetan. "I moved out of my rented room to live with my brother because I can't sleep at night.''
Radebe said regular reports of women who are killed by their partners terrified her and her family.
"The story about a woman who was shot in front of her child scared me. I have nightmares about my ex shooting me. In the dream he sits down next to me after he has shot me to make sure I am dead.
"My family, that is in KwaZulu-Natal, called me the other day and said they saw someone who looked like him, but it turned out to be a false alarm. My children know about what happened to me and they are scared."
Radebe said the justice system has failed her.
"After I learned that he was released I called the investigating officer several times but he did not give me clear answers. At some point he said he did not know why the matter was withdrawn. Thereafter he said it's because there was no evidence and then he ignored my calls. I called the police head office in Pretoria, where they told me that the system did not show why he was released; and the Krugersdorp prison where he was held said they only had his old [criminal] record," she said.
Police spokesman Constable Mzwakhe Xazi said they were investigating a case of attempted murder but that he did not have information about developments in the case.
"According to the system, the accused appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court in April. The system does not say if the matter was withdrawn but the case is still open and under investigations," he said.
"The docket will contain information about what happened in court but I am not in possession of the docket."
National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane said she could not trace the case in Roodepoort, where Radebe believes the man last appeared.
"Roodepoort, Kagiso and Krugersdorp courts could not trace the matter. The complainant is welcome to approach us or lodge representations so that her matter can be attended to," she said.
This is not the first time Radebe has been given the run-around by the authorities when trying to report her attacker.
In September, she opened a case of rape against the same man and gave police his address and photo but he was not arrested until the news agencies reported the case.
She said at the time police told her to call them whenever she saw him. He then traced her and stabbed her several times on her arms, head and in the eye.
Radebe said she had relocated twice but the man had traced her and assaulted her.

New mum reveals she didn't bathe for 1 full month after giving birth, says "I did smell but I didn't care"

New mum reveals she didn

A new mum who didn't have a bath for 30 whole days after giving birth has shared her reason for doing it.

Terry Loong, 40, said she chose not to shower for 1 month because it helped her bond with her son. She said it's called postpartum confinement, a practice she says is common in Asian culture, where a new mother does not leave the house, have visitors or, in some cases, bathe for a month following delivery.

The rationale behind this practice is that it helps protect both mum and baby from infections, gives the mother a chance to recover and recharge, and allows the two uninterrupted bonding time.
Aesthetic doctor Terry admitted she "did smell of bodily fluids" but she said she didn't care. She believes it helped her bond with little Matthew, free of any distractions, while giving her body the rest it desperately needed.

Terry, who is of Malaysian heritage and lives in Harrow, north west London, said:
I remember my mum having a period of confinement when I was little. I’m the oldest of five so I saw it a lot.
It is common in Asian culture. Some of my Chinese friends here in London have done it too but adapted it to what works for them, picking different parts of it.
I don’t know many people that did it fully, like me. The biggest thing is that people couldn’t believe I hadn’t showered.
It wasn’t pretty, but it was important. If I had another baby, I would definitely do it again.

Russia thrash Saudi Arabia 5-0 in 2018 world cup opener

The world cup kicked off today with a surprising score in the opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia. The host nation, Russia comprehensively crushed Saudi Arabia, 5-0 with Yuri Gazinsky scoring on a header 12 minutes in.
Russia’s second, third and fourth goals were all by substitutes: one by Artem Dzyuba and two by Denis Cheryshev. With time running out, Aleksandr Golovin got a fifth goal on a free kick, past a badly tired Saudi defense.

Saudi Arabia, a team whose players are virtually all based in their home league, played averagely but just couldn't get one shot on target.
Even at halftime, the Saudi Arabian players looked tired, and it did not get better as Dzyuba scored on another header, then Cheryshev added his second in the 90th minute.

Three people die in South Africa mosque attack

Three people die in South Africa mosque attack

A mosque attack in South Africa’s Western Cape province today left three people dead and more injured.

The lone killer stabbed two people to death while they were praying in Malmesbury, about 43 miles from Cape Town, the South African Police Service said. The suspect was then shot by police.

The attack followed an assault by three men on a mosque last month in Durban, South Africa’s third-biggest city, which left one man dead and two in a serious condition. While Africa’s most industrialised economy had long struggled with violent crime, attacks motivated by religion are relatively unusual.

The attack came at the end of Ramadan. Eid Eid-al-Fitr., the Islamic religious holiday that follows the month of fasting, may start as soon as Friday. “The Muslim Judicial Council is shocked to its core to learn of a brutal attack in Malmesbury,” the religious body said on its Facebook page. “We urge the community not to jump to any conclusions until clarity can be given.”
