Anti- Corruption War: 'We Stand By Nigeria' - ‎Transparency International

Anti- Corruption War:

Delia Ferreira Rubio, Chair of Transparency International, TI, has said that the anti-corruption body will stand by Nigeria to get rid of the menace called corruption in order to improve the lives of people.

Rubio made the assertion during a courtesy visit to the EFCC Headquarters, Abuja on May 23, 2018. The visit comes a few days after Ibrahim Magu, the acting EFCC Chairman emerged the new Chair of the Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Commonwealth Africa.

While offering her support to the EFCC, Rubio, who is visiting Africa for the first time, noted that her choice of Nigeria as first stop was recognition of the the country's efforts in fighting corruption.
"I am familiar with the problem and I am familiar with EFCC's fight against corruption in Nigeria as you are working in a difficult context," Rubio said.
On his part, Auwal Rafsanjani, Head, Transparency International Nigeria/Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, CISLAC, offered the support of TI to help Nigeria in curbing corruption, and commended the EFCC's exploits in the area of assets recovery.
"Transparency International recognises the efforts of the government under the leadership of the present acting Chairman, to address the lapses in our policy, party and legislation that make corruption thrive and is interested in addressing the menace called corruption," he said.
Magu appreciated Transparency International for the visit and its support, and promised to continue to put in place measures that will ensure that Nigeria received better ranking in TI's future ratings.

"We are not disappointed by the Transparency International ranking, we have seen the ranking and Nigeria has moved five points ahead of the previous ranking and we as an institution are doing well and hope to improve," he said.

He urged the Transparency International to work together with Nigeria to understand how the ratings work in order to change the perception of Nigeria as being "fantastically corrupt".

Amnesty International releases damning report about Nigerian military, accuses soldiers of raping IDP women and girls

Amnesty International releases damning report about Nigerian military, accuses soldiers of raping IDP women and girls

Amnesty International (AI) has released a report in which it accused Nigerian soldiers stationed at the different IDP camps of raping thousands of women and girls in exchange for food.
In the report, soldiers were alleged to have taken women from their husbands and camped them in settlements where they are repeatedly raped.

Five women that were interviewed by AI said they were raped in late 2015 and early 2016 in Bama Hospital camp as famine-like conditions prevailed.
Ama (not her real name), 20, said: “They will give you food but in the night they will come back around 5pm or 6pm and they will tell you to come with them… One [Civilian JTF] man came and brought food to me. The next day he said I should take water from his place [and I went]. He then closed the tent door behind me and raped me. He said I gave you these things, if you want them we have to be husband and wife”.
Ten others in the same camp told Amnesty International that they were also coerced into becoming “girlfriends” of security officials to save themselves from starvation. Most of these women had already lost children or other relatives due to lack of food, water and healthcare in the camp.
The affected women said the sexual exploitation follows an organized system, with soldiers openly coming into the camp for sex and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force JTF coming into the camp to chose the “very beautiful” women and girls to take to the soldiers outside. Women reported they were too afraid to refuse demands for sex.
“Sex in these highly coercive circumstances is always rape, even when physical force is not used, and Nigerian soldiers and Civilian JTF members have been getting away it. They act like they don’t risk sanction, but the perpetrators and their superiors who have allowed this to go unchallenged have committed crimes under international law and must be held to account,”Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria.
Amnesty International’s research further revealed that hundreds of women along with their children have been held in the notorious Giwa Barracks detention centre since 2015. While most pf them have been released, an unspecified number of them still remain in military detention.
Many of those detained since 2015 have been victims of abductions or forced marriages by Boko Haram and were detained by the military for being so-called “Boko Haram wives” instead of being rescued.
AI says it received five reports about sexual violence in Giwa barracks, while seven women said they gave birth inside their dirty, overcrowded cells without any medical assistance. At least 32 babies and children, and five women, have died in detention since 2016.
“The detention of women and girls on the basis that they were allegedly married to Boko Haram members is unlawful under international human rights law and Nigerian law, and is discriminatory,” said Osai Ojigho.

North Korea 'blows up its nuclear test site' in series of huge explosions

North Korea

North Korea has dismantled its nuclear test site, in a planned move portrayed by the isolated regime as a goodwill gesture ahead of a potential summit next month with the US.

It is not known to what extent the northeastern Punggye-ri facility has been demolished, but foreign journalists invited to witness the destruction described a series of 'huge explosions'.

The explosions at the nuclear test site deep in the mountains of the North's sparsely populated northeast were reportedly centered on three tunnels into the underground site and a number of observation towers in the surrounding area.

'There was a huge explosion, you could feel it. Dust came at you, the heat came at you. It was extremely loud,' Sky News' Tom Cheshire, who was among the journalists invited, wrote on the British broadcaster's website.
North Korea
Mr Cheshire added that the entrances to the tunnels had been 'theatrically rigged' with plastic explosives and 'wires everywhere'. Yonhap news agency, citing South Korean reporters at the scene, said multiple explosions were heard throughout the day, beginning at 11am (3am GMT) until 4.17pm.

Punggye-ri has been the staging ground for all six of the North's nuclear tests, including its latest and by far most powerful one in September last year, which Pyongyang said was an H-bomb.

PDP to Buhari: ''Stop whining, accept failure and get set to leave''

 PDP to Buhari:

Press statement from PDP
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to end his blame game and use of hate language against past leaders as cover for his poor performance, economic hardship and escalated insecurity his administration has caused Nigerians despite ample resources at their disposal.
It is sad that President Buhari does not have a single development project initiated and implemented by his administration in any part of the country in the last three years.
He has also failed to fulfill the littlest of his 2015 campaign promises through which Nigerians were deceived to vote him into office.
Now that he has failed, one wonders what other false promises the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) will anchor their 2019 campaign and elections.
It is tragic that instead of being remorseful, the Buhari Presidency finds it convenient to engage in endless blame game, shameful attempts to appropriate PDP projects and programmes, as well as dishing out of false performance indices ahead of its three years anniversary on May 29.
Worst still, President Buhari finds solace in commissioning projects executed by other leaders, like his humiliating commissioning of a regular bus station constructed by the Lagos state government and a borehole in Jigawa State, which show crass failure of governance.
It is embarrassing that whenever our President visits other world leaders, he would have nothing to present but mere rhetoric from a prepared speech, while other leaders proudly reel out their achievements.
Nigerians recalled that last March, our nation was embarrassed when the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, cheerfully reeled out his achievements under one year in office, including his farming for job initiative, the senior high school free education, the one district-one factory projects, one village-one dam project among others, only for President Buhari to present an empty score card when it was his turn to speak.
Last month, Nigerians witnessed another international embarrassment when President Buhari could not present any development project before United States President Donald Trump, who made his nation proud by showcasing his achievements and the potentials of his country.
Nigerians can recall President Buhari's poor showing at the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London, where his only achievement was to further demarket our nation by declaring our youths as lazy and lovers of freebies.
President Buhari and his handlers must know that Nigerians are tired of their ineptitude and blame game. The beauty of democracy is that it affords the citizens the inalienable right to remove any government that does not effectively govern and this is the inevitable end of the APC, come 2019.

'Every Nigerian citizen being detained illegally in the country should be freed without further delay' - Femi Falana

Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights activist, Femi Falana today thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for his birthday wishes and prayers as he turned 60 on May 20.

Falana expressed the appreciation in a message he copied to the News Agency of Nigeria saying he was humbled by the love shown to him by Buhari on his birthday.

He however, requested release of Nigerians detained `illegally’ across the country, as a special birthday gift from the Federal government.
“I thank President Muhammadu Buhari for his wishes and prayers for me, but the birthday gift which I humbly ask from the Federal Government is more commitment to respect for human rights and rule of law. In particular, all Nigerian citizens, who are being detained illegally in the country should be freed without any further delay,” he said.

PDP reacts to alleged assassination attempt on Governor Wike, vows not to leave anything to chance

PDP reacts to alleged assassination attempt on Governor Wike, vows not to leave anything to chance

Read the press statement below
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the outburst by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government that it would have dragged in Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, but for his constitutional immunity, confirms the fears that government wants to silence the opposition.
PDP condemns in very strong terms, the further threats against Governor Wike by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who arrogantly dismissed the governor’s allegation that there was a plot by the Federal Government to kill him in a crowd.
It is shocking that instead of calling for an investigation into the serious revelation, the Federal Government resorted to siege mentality to scare the governor, ostensibly to cover up the severity of the allegation.
Nigerians will recall that the PDP had earlier raised the alarm over plots to harass, intimidate, implicate and orchestrate untoward situations like assassinations, unexplained accidents, inexplicable "armed robbery” attacks, high profile abduction and sudden disappearances of opposition leaders and members.
The PDP, therefore, invites all Nigerians and the international community to note this threat against Governor Wike, as well as the action and inaction of the APC-led Federal Government, as we are not prepared to leave anything to chance.

Gombe state House of Assembly mace stolen

Gombe state House of Assembly mace stolen

The mace of the Gombe state house of assembly was stolen during plenary today Thursday May 24th. This incident comes weeks after the mace at the Nigerian senate was stolen by thugs..
According to reports, the Bauchi state house of Assembly mace was snatched during a siting to remove Ahmed Haruna, minority leader of the assembly, who represents Gombe north state constituency.
Haruna was reported to have held a press conference on May 5th condemning the ward congress of the All Progressives Congress in the state. This angered members of the party in the Assembly, which is dominated by the People’s Democratic Party, and they moved to remove him. Five out of eight APC members had signed the motion for his removal.
However during plenary today, one of the lawmakers who had endorsed his removal, made a U-turn, saying he had been forced to endorse the motion under duress. This led to an equal split of those for his removal and those against it. In the ensuing drama, a member of the Assembly reportedly made away with the mace aided by another lawmaker.

Grenfell mother died in final embrace with her son before fire ‘fused’ them together

Grenfell mother died in final embrace with her son before fire ?fused? them together

A mother and son who attempted to escape from inside their Grenfell Tower flat as fire razed the building were found dead in each other’s arms, their family said.
Marjorie Vital, 68, and her son Ernie, 50, lived on the 19th floor of Grenfell Tower in flat 162. During the fire last year that killed at least 72 people, the mother and son tried to escape by climbing to the top floor of the tower block and huddled together in the bathroom of an abandoned flat but died before they could be rescued.

Their bodies were later found fused together on the 23rd floor.

Grenfell mother died in final embrace with her son before fire ?fused? them together

Harrowing footage showing the charred wreckage of a former flat inside the tower was played at the inquiry yesterday. Those who survived the burning building suffered panic attacks and even collapsed after seeing images of people trapped inside in the tower.

Grenfell mother died in final embrace with her son before fire ?fused? them together

Speaking at the inquiry, Marjorie’s other son, who asked not to be named, said their family had taken some comfort from knowing the 68-year-old died with her son Ernie despite the circumstances.
He said:
We now have the evidence that their bodies were fused together in the intensity of the fire. It reminded me, as a child growing up he was constantly in my mother’s arms, and when they were fused together it symbolised to me their level of closeness that they had, that umbilical cord, that my brother still relatively had intact.
And the point of them dying like that, it became an advantage, the fact that they were still closely linked together in that way, mother and child.

He added that he imagined his brother practically carrying his mother to the top floor when it became clear no other escape route was possible.
He said:
They entered the flat and they made their way to the bathroom.
I have imagined myself as my brother in that bathroom, filling the bath with water… and there’s no way I’m leaving my mother and my mother wouldn’t leave me.
And there’s a sense of security in that last moment, knowing you’re not alone.
