Election reordering: Senate suspends Senator Omo-Agege over his comment about President Buhari

Election reordering: Senate suspends Senator Omo-Agege over his comment about President Buhari

The Nigerian senate has suspended its colleague, Ovie Omo-Agege, for 90 days over his remark that the reordered election sequence was targeted at President Muhammdu Buhari.

Shortly after the passage of the amendment to the 2010 Electoral Act, Omo-Agege told newsmen that the change in the sequence was targeted at President Buhari.
Omo-Agege while speaking to newsmen said “You don’t make a law to target one person. The perception is that the law is targeted at the president. I will continue to protest it. I can tell you it will not become a law,”
His statement did not go down well with the leadership of the Senate who ordered an investigation to be carried out by its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions committee.

The committee presented its report to the house this morning. Amongst the recommendation was for Omo-Agege to be suspended for 180 legislative days (1 year).  Senate President Bukola Saraki upon receiving the recommendations, called for leniency. After much deliberation, the suspension was reduced to 90 days9six months).
Read the speech from senate president, Bukola Saraki, announcing Omo-Agege's suspension below
Distinguished Colleagues, a number of points have been raised. One borders on the issue of preserving the integrity of this institution. To me, that is what i think is the most important thing for us.
Second, is where we take actions that are not sincere. I think in this chamber, if we want to talk about who has the right to say he is Chairman of a Parliamentary Support Group for Mr. President both by action and by what we have done, I think that I have the right to lead that — more than anyone else here.
Those of us that understand politics, understand that because of our own peculiar interest, sometimes some people decide to act like they are holier than thou or more committed — at the expense of others. This is not something that we should tolerate, and I believe that in an institution like this we must show discipline, but at the same time we must also show compassion.
Distinguished Colleagues, there must be discipline. We must show that such groups must be suspended and the case in court must be withdrawn.
In consideration of that we can look at leniency on what is being recommended.
Distinguished Colleagues I’d like for you to make recommendations on this going forward.
I think by that we would have captured:
1. No more of these kind of groups in the Senate;
2. The issue of court actions;
3. We are not in any hurry to take anybody away from this family; and
4. We must lay down an example by showing that there is discipline and apply some form of discipline on this matter.
If I can make recommendations from this chair, I’d say that this issue before us, maybe we should reduce the number of days by half but with an understanding that we can revisit and look at this issue. We must send out a strong message. There are some people who are fanatics and such actions will expose a lot of people and allies.
Recommendations:
1. The senator involved, Sen Agege should withdraw the case;
2. The support group should be disbanded; and
3. Out of compassion, we amend the recommendation of the committee to 90 days and we move forward.

Three dead over 100 injured after smoking fake weed laced with rat poison

Three dead over 100 injured after smoking fake weed laced with rat poison

3 people have died and more than 100 people have suffered severe bleeding after smoking weed believed to be laced with rat poison.
The deaths all happened in the state of Illinois but four other states have reported cases of poisoning from smoking weed. Tests have been carried out on the synthetic weed and several patients and they came back positive for a lethal ingredient often used in rat poison.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued a national alert that patients with severe, unexplained bleeding may be additional cases. The CDC is helping Illinois authorities investigate the outbreak in that state, which began in early March. Illinois reported seven more cases on Tuesday, bringing the nationwide total to at least 116.
Symptoms include coughing up blood, blood in the urine, severe bloody noses, bleeding gums and internal bleeding. CDC’s alert says outside Illinois, emergency rooms in Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin and Maryland have treated affected patients since March 10.
CDC’s Renee Funk said: "This is an unusual outbreak."
Funk added that is unclear how the contamination occurred.

Resident writes Governor Ambode to remove Oba Of Isheri Olofin and declare the kingdom illegal within 30 days

Resident writes Governor Ambode to remove Oba Of Isheri Olofin and declare the kingdom?illegal within?30 days

Alhaji Shamsideen Alade, a resident of Idimu, Lagos State, has given the state government 30 days to remove the Oba of Isheri Olofin and declare the kingdom illegal.

He said that the kingdom, created by the state government in 1984, had no history in Idimu area as it was never one of the 500 villages in Ikeja District in the last 500 years. Besides, Alade said in a letter to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, that no such town as Isheri Olofin ever existed in the composite Map of communities in Idimu area drawn by late Herbert Macaulay in December, 1919.

Similarly, he contended that Isheri Olofin was never recorded among the 202 settlement communities inherited from the defunct Western Region by virtue of Decree 14 of 1967, which created Lagos State. A copy of the letter dated March 5, 2018 and signed by Bola Aide, counsel to Alade, was made available to News Agency of Nigeria today in Abuja.

In the letter, Alade also stated that it was only Isheri-Idimu that was recorded as one of the 20 “customary tenant’s’’ of Idimu village, and was duly paying rent to the community.  He said that Wahab Balogun, the Oba of the non-existent Isheri-Olofin, had openly declared that he was from Orile Agege, adding that the non-existence of Isheri-Olofin was evident in the government’s Intelligence Report No. 29939 of 1935.  Alade said that Isheri-Olofin kingdom was an “illegal political creation against all historical and documentary evidences’’.

He said that the illegal creation had given rise to unconstitutional and illegal arrogation of authority by Balogun to forcefully and unlawfully acquire people’s land in Idimu and displace many families.

According to him, by his action, Balogun has put the lives and property of over 650,000 inhabitants of Idimu in jeopardy.  Alade, therefore, urged the state government to quickly address the issue by declaring Isheri-Olofin non-existent and remove the Oba, saying that he would drag the government to court if it failed to act within 30 days.

“No such village ever existed in the history of Idimu or the entire 500 villages that made up Ikeja District preceding your illegal and non-ancestral but political creation,” Alade stressed.

In a series of tweets, the party specifically mentioned the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremmadu, as well as Governors Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose of Rivers and Ekiti States respectively as some PDP members marked out for humiliation by the APC.

Text of Press Conference By the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Presented by the National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, @officialKolaO On Matters of Urgent National Importance, Today, Wednesday, April 11, 2018.
Today, in our country, there is an orchestrated plan by the ruling @APCNigeria led FG to use the state apparatus of power to coerce, emasculate and effectively decapitate opposition and other dissenting voices, foist a one-party state and push a self-succession bid for @MBuhari
Currently, the @APCNigeria has fully commenced a major onslaught on leaders and key voices in the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), particularly our state governors, opposition leaders in the National Assembly as well as our presidential hopefuls.

You are already aware of the numerous exposed plots by the APC and its FG to frame up and humiliate the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremmadu, as well as PDP governors, particularly, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike & his Ekiti state counterpart, @GovAyoFayose
This nation belongs to all us, we are equal stakeholders and it lies in the hands of the electorate to decide who holds any elective office at any level and not the dictatorship of the government of the day. @APCNigeria

We therefore directly caution the @MBuhari administration to desist from this attempt at foisting a siege mentality on the political class and citizenry as if we are under a military regime.@APCNigeria
