Bill Gates To Buhari: Your growth plan doesn’t reflect people’s needs

Bill Gates To Buhari: Your growth plan doesn’t reflect people’s needs

.
.
Philanthropist and Founder of Microsoft Corporation, Bill Gates, on Thursday in Abuja, faulted part of the FG’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.
.
.
Gates, the Co-Chairman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said the implementation of the ERGP is at odds with the needs of Nigerians.
.
.
The ERGP, which was launched by Pres. Buhari in 2017, is a medium-term plan for 2017-2020, that sets out an ambitious roadmap to achieve a seven percent growth rate for the country by 2020.
.
.
It is aimed at restoring economic growth while leveraging the ingenuity and resilience of Nigerians.
.
.
But Gates, while delivering a speech at the special and expanded National Economic Council on Investment in Human Capital in Abuja, suggested the plan got part of its priorities wrong.
.
.
“The Nigerian government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan identifies investing in our people as one of three strategic executives, but the execution priorities don’t fully reflect people’s needs – prioritising physical capital over human capital,” he said.
According to him, Nigeria can only maximise its enormous potential when citizens are well equipped. As such, he expects the government to prioritise human capital development.
“Nigeria has unmatched economic potentials but what becomes of that potential depends on the choices you make as Nigeria’s leaders. The most important choice you can make is to maximise your greatest resource – the Nigerian people.
Nigeria will thrive when every Nigerian is able to thrive, If you invest in their health, education and opportunities, the human capital that we are talking about today, then that will lay the foundation for sustained prosperity,” Gates said.
He stressed the need for the country to act fast by analysing the state of country’s health sector. “Much of Nigeria still looks like a low-income country. Nigeria is one of the most dangerous places in the world to give birth,” he said.

PDP threatens legal action against Kano State government for stopping its planned rally today

PDP threatens legal action against Kano State government for stopping its planned rally today

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano state has threatened to take legal action against the state government for allegedly using the police to stop its planned rally in Gaya on Saturday, March 24.

The state party chairman, Alhaji Mas’ud El-Jibril Doguwa made the stand of the party known while addressing newsmen in Kano on Friday. He said during the rally, the party planned to receive the gubernatorial candidate of  People Democratic Movement (PDM), Engr Bashir Ishaq and his supporters into the PDP.

He said as a matter of official courtesy and to ensure adequate security coverage, the party wrote to inform all relevant security agencies including the Nigeria Police and the DSS weeks ago.  He explained that all the security agencies assured the party of their cooperation which gave them the courage to go ahead with their preparations.

“The police only yesterday (Thursday) communicated to us another decision adivising that we shelve our planned rally over what they maliciously called “security challenges”.  He alleged that it was the state government  that planned and decided to give the party what he described as ‘Kwankwassiyya treatment’.

He said the 1999 constitution as amended in sections 40 and 41 (1) and (2) A has guaranteed every Nigerian freedom of assembly and association with other persons including belonging to any political party. He said the constitution did not require the party to ask for permission pointing out that the party had done the needful.  “It is only fair if a registered political party is allowed to exercise its constitutionally guaranteed fundamental human rights to assemble in Gaya tomorrow, “he said.

Rap mogul, Russell Simmons slammed with another rape suit

Rap mogul, Russell Simmons slammed with another rape suit

Hip-hop legend, Russell Simmons was on Friday slammed with a $10-million rape lawsuit filed by a woman in Los Angeles, the latest in a string of accusations against him ranging from harassment to rape.

The unidentified woman said in the complaint filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court that the mogul raped her in a hotel after the two met at a concert and then went to a club.  At least nine women have now come forward with misconduct allegations against the 60-year-old Simmons.

In January, aspiring filmmaker Jennifer Jarosik sued him for alleged rape, seeking $5 million as she called for a reckoning in the hip-hop industry on the mistreatment of women.  In light of the most recent suit, Simmons released a statement saying “I vehemently deny all the allegations made against me. They have shocked me to my core as I have never been abusive or violent in any way in my relations with women,” he said in the statement, noting that he had submitted to and passed several lie detector tests concerning such allegations.

In the latest complaint, the woman said Simmons lured her into his hotel room, threatened her, and then “threw her on the bed and raped her.”  She said she first met the rap impresario at a concert she had attended with her son, and that Simmons had invited her to an after-party.  Filmmaker Jarosik alleged in her suit that Simmons who stepped down from all of his business roles after the first allegations against him surfaced propositioned her for sex.  When she said no, he allegedly hit and raped her.

Simmons was an enormously influential figure in popularizing hip-hop, co-founding the Def Jam label that brought rap acts such as the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and Public Enemy to a broad US audience.

The recent spate of allegations against him surfaced as the #MeToo movement gained steam, with scores of women speaking out over harassment, assault and rape in the wake of disgraced film tycoon Harvey Weinstein’s downfall.

Photos: Nigeria Army reopens Maiduguri-Bama-Banki road held by Boko Haram for years

Photos: Nigeria Army reopens Maiduguri-Bama-Banki road held by Boko Haram for years

The Nigerian military today reopened up the Maiduguri-Bama-Banki road, a major road that links the two local government headquarters in Borno state. The road had been closed for over four years after it was seized by Boko Haram terrorists.

Speaking at the reopening ceremony, the theatre commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Nicholas Rogers, said
''I will recall that on the 1st September 2014, the Maiduguri-Bama-Banki was closed due to the activity of the insurgency which affected the economy of the area. And in the course of the insurgency, together with our Cameroonian counterparts, we have been able to clear the road up to Sambisa forest. So it is time our people should start thinking of going to Bama. I am happy that these roads have been opened in the first phase of our operation, and that also gives our people the leverage of resuming their commercial activities along that axis and also giving them confidence and hope. We implore the commercial road users to kindly abide by the code of conduct that we have given them, so that we can ply the road with some level of safety. That does not mean that we are not going to have some challenges. We envisaged that the miscreants may want to lay one or two mines on the road. But we must developed the courage and confidence to use this road until they are worn out,” he said

'I have no regrets about my failed marriage' - Nollywood actress, Mimi Orjiekwe

Nollywood actress, Mimi Orjiekwe has once again spoken about her failed marriage to Charles Billion and this time she says she has no regrets.

In a recent interview with New telegraph, the actress said, 'my failed marriage was just a lesson and I don’t regret the union. My baby was a product of the marriage and I love her a lot. I also believe that God made me experience it for me to be in a better place. I am not cordial with my ex-husband (Charles Billion); when I move on, I move on, but the baby keeps us together from a distance. I am not bitter with men even after the experience; I am happy'.

She continued to say, 'I gave my marriage my best; I cannot say I was always right, but I am a superwoman and I try my best to make everyone around me happy. I have no regrets because if you have good intentions, you will always be fine. We dated for three years before getting married in 2015; so, I didn’t rush into it'.

Mimi also spoke on the posibility of getting married again saying, 'Yes, I plan to marry again. My marriage is my private life and I don’t owe anyone an explanation. I don’t think there is any problem in getting married to an entertainer; it is about marrying the right person. I was probably in love with him then; so, when he asked me to marry him, I thought I would be happy with him. I guess I didn’t do my research very well. Right now, if I want to get married, I have to pay attention to every little detail. I will not just fall in love with any man for his wealth or looks'.
