Canadian Black civil rights activist Viola Desmond is the new face of the country’s $10 bill

Canadian Black civil rights activist Viola Desmond is the new face of the country?s $10 bill

Canada’s new $10 bill now features Viola Desmond, one of the country’s civil rights activists.
Desmond is popular for refusing to leave a "white-only" section of a theater on Nov. 8, 1946 - a decade before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus. Over 70 years after, Desmond was honored last week as the first Black person and the first non-Royal woman ever to be featured alone on Canadian currency.

Viola Desmond’s sister, Wanda Robson, was one of the first people in Canada to receive a copy of the new $10 bill. In a Bank of Canada video, she said her sister’s photo on it is "so life-like. It’s as if she’s in this room!"

Desmond was picked out of the 26,000 submissions that came after the Bank of Canada announced it would be choosing a Canadian woman to be the face of the country’s $10 for the first time, according to the New York Times. The new $10 bill will be in circulation by the end of the year.
Another interesting thing about the new bill is that for the first time, it is vertical, meaning it’s meant to be looked at up-and-down rather than horizontally.

Mauritius president rejects calls to resign over credit card scandal

Mauritius president rejects calls to resign over credit card scandal

Mauritian President, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim rejected calls for her to resign over accusations of financial misconduct and will provide evidence to debunk these, her office said in a statement today.

In February, local L’express newspaper said Gurib-Fakim had used a credit card issued by an international non-governmental organisation to buy clothes and jewellery in Italy and Dubai.

She has denied any wrongdoing and said she had refunded all the money in question.

Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth said Gurib-Fakim, the first woman to hold the largely ceremonial role, would step down on March 12.  However, she contradicted this in a statement published on the website of her office on Wednesday.

“Her Excellency rejects any resignation prospect.  “She is ready to take legal action before the courts to defend herself against the slanderous accusations,” the State House statement said.

Report says Mauritius is trying to shift an economy mostly focused on sugar, textiles and tourism toward offshore banking, business outsourcing, luxury real estate and medical tourism. The report in the L’express newspaper said Gurib-Fakim had used a credit card issued by Planet Earth Institute, an organisation which supports education by offering scholarships.

The president had served as an unpaid director of the NGO and that the credit card was to be used to pay for the promotion of a doctorate programme named after the president.

''Unlike Jonathan, I acted fast when the Dapchi abduction happened'' President Buhari says

President Buhari today said that unlike the previous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan that was insensitive to the plight of parents of the Chibok girls when they were abducted in April 2014, his administration acted fast when 110 female students were abducted in Dapchi, Yobe state.

Speaking in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital on Wednesday during his sympathy visit to the state, President Buhari  vowed to ensure that the girls are reunited with their families.
The Federal Government’s response to the unfortunate abduction of the school girls is a clear departure from the insensitivity of the past administration which looked the other way while the Chibok girls were taken away in 2014 and held in captivity for over 3 years. Due to our commitment, over 100 Chibok girls have been rescued and reunited with their families, sent back to school and empowered with requisite skills. You may recall that recently, our negotiation efforts led to the release of abducted University of Maiduguri lecturers, some women Police personnel, students and even an NYSC member. We, therefore, have no doubt that the Dapchi girls will be rescued or released. I can reassure parents, Nigerians and the International Community that we will do all that is within our power to make sure that the girls are brought back safely to their families.
There will be no rest till the last girl, whether from Chibok and Dapchi, is released. The girls, like all our citizens, must enjoy unhindered freedom and pursue their legitimate aspirations. The Dapchi and Chibok students are our girls and must enjoy our protection. They must live to achieve their individual ambitions, to be great women of tomorrow. It is our duty to protect them. We are determined to restore peace to all part of the country – from the West to the East; North to the South. While calling for calm, I implore affected parents and families to restrain from making statements that may jeopardize the success of the rescue mission''.

Court Admits Video Evidence Detailing $1m Found in House traced former service chief, Alex Badeh

Court Admits Video Evidence Detailing $1m Found in House traced former service chief, Alex Badeh

A video recording detailing how a bag containing $1million was found in a property linked to a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Alex Badeh (retd), was on March 14, 2018 admitted as exhibit against him in a N3.9billion money laundering case brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Badeh is standing trial before Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court, Abuja, along with Iyalikam Nigeria Limited, for allegedly diverting Nigeria Air Force, NAF funds for personal enrichment, and acquisition of choice properties in Abuja.
At the last sitting on February 28, 2018 the EFCC’s legal team led by Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, had through its PW20, Anna Awe Akuson, sought to tender a certificate of identification and a compact disk, detailing the search on the property where the bag of dollar bills was found.
The defence had however, objected to the admissibility of the documents, through its lead counsel, Akin Olujimi, SAN.
At today’s sitting, Jacobs applied that the video be played in open court, “so that it will not remain to be a sleeping document.” There was no objection from the defence.
Akuson, a cameraman with the EFCC, while being led in evidence by Jacobs, through the video which was played on a projector in the courtroom, then narrated how the $1million was found in a wardrobe in the house.
Akuson said:
“We searched all the rooms, including the parlour, bedrooms, swimming pool, cinema room and bathrooms. We found furniture inside the house with ‘Badeh 9’ written on it. We found other carton(s) with ‘Badeh’ written boldly on it. In the parlour, there were some cartons containing furniture and pillows. We found a wardrobe that was not yet installed. We also found a knife with ‘Badeh’ written on it, as well as an inscription, ‘Pakistan Aeronautical Complex - A symbol of excellence in aviation''.
Counsel to the second defendant, S. T. Ologoorisha, however raised an objection arguing that the witness “cannot adduce evidence”.
“The video speaks for itself. The witness should not be allowed to supplement the video that is already being shown”, Ologoorisha said.
However, Jacobs argued that: “The video will remain a dormant document if it is not demonstrated by the witness as it cannot describe itself”.
Thereafter, Justice Abang allowed the witness to continue her evidence-in-chief.
Akuson, further told the court that:
We found $1million in the wardrobe. We found a bag inside the wardrobe and we opened the zip of the bag from the wardrobe. The two men in the video are operatives of the EFCC. The other man with the white T-shirt is a carpenter. The last man behind with the white t shirt and black is a neighbor’s security guard who witnessed the search. We found nothing in the other room. We brought the $1million dollars to the office and took it to the exhibit room. I recorded the exhibit keeper counting it.”

Upon cross examination, Akuson further said,
“The evidence I have given relates to what I did on 24 February, 2016. We carried out the search with 10 mobile policemen and two operatives.”
Justice Abang, thereafter, admitted the compact disc and certificate of identification dated 27th February, 2018 in evidence as exhibits T21 and T22 respectively.
The matter has been adjourned to March 27, 2018 for continuation of cross-examination and trial.

Breaking: President Buhari rejects Electoral act amendment

Breaking: President Buhari rejects Electoral act amendment

President Buhari has rejected the proposed amendments to Nigeria’s Electoral Act. The electoral act was amended by both chambers of the National Assembly last month. In the amended act, the election sequence was adjusted.

According to the amended act, the election of the lawmakers was to come up first, followed by that of state lawmakers and governors, and lastly the presidential election.

However in a letter addressed to the Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, President Buhari rejected the amendment, stating that the amendments amongst other things, infringes on the rights of INEC.

Some APC senators had kicked against the adoption of the report, accusing the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, of influencing it.

With the rejection of amendments by the president, the next option left for the National Assembly is to override the president’s veto.
