Housemaid beats boss to coma after stealing money, property

A Lagos State civil servant identified as Mistura, is currently battling for survival at LASUTH after being allegedly attacked by her maid in the Ejigbo.
According to Punchng, Mistura had been in a coma since Monday, March 5, 2018, when she was attacked with blended pepper and a wine bottle by the maid, identified as Susan Samson.
Despite a three-hour surgery on Wednesday, the victim had yet to come round and was in the intensive care unit. Mistura had employed Samson on February 4, 2018 to assist her with domestic chores.
The 18-year-old suspect was reported to have stolen her boss’ money last Friday and Saturday. After the stolen money was recovered from Samson’s bag, Mistura was said to have alerted the agent who brought her.
The Ogoja, Cross River State indigene, in a desperate bid to escape from the house, which Mistura had locked, allegedly poured blended pepper on the boss while she lay on the bed.
She then grabbed a champagne bottle and smashed it on the victim’s head repeatedly until she passed out. The suspect was reportedly apprehended by residents who heard the victim’s scream for help.
The victim’s husband, Alhaji Sikiru, said: “My wife is in the intensive care unit of LASUTH. Her brain has collapsed and has been removed from the body and kept somewhere. Her kidney is already packing up. I hope she makes it out alive.”
A source told Punchng that the couple had a disagreement late 2017 over the issue of getting a maid as the husband was against the idea. The source said the dispute was so intense that some relatives had to wade in.
The state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, has decried the act wickedness and ordered a thorough investigation and diligent prosecution of the case. On his part, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said it was a case of attempted murder.

APC borrowed N11tr in 3 years, PDP N6tr in 16 years — Melaye

Dino Melaye says APC under Pres. Buhari has accrued N11 trillion debt in three years, as against N6 trillion borrowed by PDP in 16 years.
Melaye said this while speaking at the upper legislative chamber on Wednesday.
The lawmaker said despite floating many Eurobonds, “there is no specific programme” to empower the youth.
He spoke in reaction to the rejection of Peace Corps bill by President Muhammadu Buhari. “About $5.5bn was borrowed from euro bond; what part of it will the youths of this country benefit from?” he asked.
“About $1bn is to be spent on security and how does this affect the youth of this country. Without fear or favour, the Peoples Democratic Party, in 16 years, borrowed N6tn and this government in three years, has borrowed N11tn but there is no specific programme that will empower the youth.
Also, N500bn was earmarked for the social investment programme of the federal government, but we have not seen any impact. If the Peace Corps is given an opportunity to exist, thousands will be employed and this will help to fight unemployment in this country.”

Chinese man arrested with N1.73bn pangolin in Lagos

A Chinese man identified as Mr. Li Chaomin, has been arrested by the Nigerian Customs Service, in connection with pangolin scales with a duty paid value (DPV) of N1.73 billion.
The banned items, which were packed in 329 sacks, were impounded at Opebi, Ikeja in Lagos. However, Chaomin said that he got approval from Chinese government to export the banned goods from Nigeria.

According to him, after several efforts to obtain permission from the Ministry of Environment to export the animal scales failed, he contacted his country. He said he had been trading in Nigeria since 2015 on China candles, power bank and lighters.
He said: “Some business people approached me a few months ago that China market needed pangolin which they used in producing medicines. When I went to China, I found that the Chinese use it to produce medicines to cure various diseases.
I applied for permit in Nigeria but I was not able to get the permit… All the documents are in my email address. I bought the pangolin plates and put them in my warehouse because I thought I was operating with legal documents.’’
According to Chaomin, he usually goes to Cameroon to get the pangolin plates for export. This latest seizure was the second within a month in Lagos.

Ambode's wife calls for removal of barriers impeding women's progress

Ambode

As Lagos joined the rest of world to mark this year's International Women's Day celebration, wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode has called for the removal of barriers impeding the progress of women in the country.

Speaking at the Women's Day celebration held at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos on Thursday, Mrs Ambode said women must be ready to challenge stereotypes and should rise up to question old established practices that were not women-friendly.

March 8 every year is observed worldwide as International Women’s Day, to celebrate the achievements of women, beam the searchlight on challenges facing them and to push global activism for total women’s emancipation.

Mrs. Ambode said: "We must remove barriers that stand in the way of the progress of women. When we stand together, we can achieve anything and any obstacle can be pulled down.

"We must nominate and support women for emerging opportunities, whenever they arise. Supporting one another is a duty we owe and must carry out every time for women to move on, “she said.

The First Lady said though grounds remained to be covered, women must not lose sight of where they were coming from, hence the need to celebrate their achievements always.

She said that the theme of this year's celebration, "Press for Progress" was suitable as it gave assurance of greater successes as women pressed further.

She identified literacy, health, economic empowerment, politics and governance, as areas of noticeable success for women, stressing that they served as impetus of courage for women to press further for progress.

The Governor’s wife submitted that while gender parity would not be achieved overnight, it certainly would not take eternity.

Also speaking, Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode reiterated his administration's commitment to protect and uphold the dignity of women in the State.

"We will continue to give maximum support to all agencies and institutions established to promote the welfare and economic empowerment of women. In line with our administration's inclusive policy, we shall continue to provide equal opportunities for all citizens without prejudice to gender and socio-economic background.

Ambode, who was represented by the former Secretary to the State Government, Princess Aderenle Adeniran-Ogunsanya said the theme of the celebration was apt as it reminded women of the need to be steadfast and not relent in advocating for positive change and moving forward in all areas of human endeavour.

"Beyond the traditional role of home keeping as mothers and wives, there is a lot women can contribute to national development. It is an indispensable fact that some progress have been made over the years as a result of sustained advocacy by government institutions, and most especially, non-governmental organisations.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA, Dr. Lola Akande charged men to make commitment to wage war against domestic violence and all forms of discrimination against women.
She also implored them to be ambassadors in the campaign to restore fully, the dignity and rights of women, seeing them as partners in the task of raising successful children from peaceful and progressive homes.

In attendance were Chief (Mrs.) Kemi Nelson, APC Southwest Women Leader; State Exco members, body of permanent secretaries, chairmen of Local governments, COWLSO members, Artisans, market women, different political groups, etc.

I have lost count of those I have defrauded —Mother of 5

A 45-year-old mother of five, Ashile Basirat, paraded by Ogun State Police Command for allegedly conspiring with robbers to dupe passengers in Abeokuta, said she took into the illicit act of duping people because she had once been a victim.
She said her children had advised her to stop the illicit business, but her venture into trade did not yield the desired profit, making her continue her illicit business.
The Police Commissioner in the state, Ahmed Iliyasu, said Basirat, a suspected member of a fraud syndicate, engaged in fooling unsuspecting passengers by hypnotising them, take them to the nearest Automated Teller Machine, ATM, point to dispose them of cash.
Ilyasu said the syndicate specialized in driving commercial taxi cab, pretending to be drivers and simulated passengers to dupe the unsuspecting members of the public. Other members of the syndicate are Leonard Ifeanyi, Tajudeen Erinosho and Ashimiyu Olaniyan.
Explaining how her gang operated before they were apprehended, Basirat claimed that her gang members act as passengers in a taxi, pretending to be waiting for one more passenger.
She said when the victim is found, they would tell him or her that there was money in the booth, which could not be spent because it was spiritually locked.
She further explained that the victim would be persuaded to follow them to a priest and “he or she would be brought to me, while I pretend to be an Ifa priestess (Iya Alawo).”
She further disclosed that her victims are too numerous to count as she started the trade in 2011 after she was duped in 2010.

Footballer Balotelli blasts Nigerian Italy’s first black senator

Italian international footballer Mario Balotelli has blasted the country’s first black senator, who was elected in Sunday’s general ballot for the far-right, anti-immigrant League party.
Balotelli, who was born in Palermo to Ghanaian parents and has played 33 times for Italy, has long been a target for racist abuse.
He took to Instagram to target Nigerian-born Tony Iwobi, who was elected in the northern industrial city of Brescia — a major immigration hub.
“Maybe I’m blind or maybe they haven’t told him that he’s black yet. Disgrace!” Balotelli wrote on Tuesday in a post that was subsequently removed.
Iwobi has long argued along with League leader Matteo Salvini that increased racism in Italy should be blamed on illegal immigration.
Balotelli posted a photo showing Iwobi, 60, and Salvini both wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the campaign slogan “Stop invasion”.
The slogan is reference to the more than 690,000 migrants who have landed on Italian shores from North Africa since 2013. The League blames the arrivals for “social conflict” and making Italian cities less safe.
Born in Gusau in northern Nigeria but living in Italy since the 1970s, Iwobi has been a supporter of the League for more than two decades.

Serial rapist sentenced to 72 years, begs for death sentence

The serial rapist who on Tuesday begged the court to hang him for his heinous acts, has been sentenced to an effective 72 years in jail, Zimbabwe.
According to Herald, regional magistrate Mrs Dambudzo Malunga had sentenced Charles Magombedze to 78 years in prison, but conditionally suspended six years.
Magombedze was convicted on eight counts of rape on his own plea of guilty. He shocked the court when he requested the hangman’s noose, saying he was unable to exorcise the evil spirit that led him into committing the crimes if left alive.
Malunga said Magombedze deserved severe punishment as he behaved like a beast when he raped the victims by using dangerous weapons like iron bars, axes and machetes when he committed the offences.
Magombedze raped a woman before abusing a pupil at Chibaya High School in June last year. In the same month, he raped another woman who was doing laundry along Tugwi River in Chivi.
In October the same year, the convict raped another woman who was going to church. He also raped a police constabulary’s wife, then raped a 14- year-old girl, who was herding cattle in January this year.
He raped another woman after waylaying her at Charumbira Farm. In the same month, Magombedze raped a child he found sleeping in a hut at Jeka Village. He raped another woman after threatening her near Stephen business centre.
He also abused a woman in a garden at Rukanda Farm in the same month after hitting her with a brick. Magombedze raped another woman whom he found in a garden along Tugwi River.
The serial rapist also handcuffed and raped another woman at Shokoni Business Centre in Chivi. He raped another one at Razi Business Centre in the same district while she was coming from hospital.
Magombedze also faces attempted murder charges after stabbing a woman five times whom she failed to rape after she managed to flee.
On his initial appearance in court on Tuesday, Magombedze said he was a member of a Satanic cult whose goal was to spill blood and to have unprotected sex to breed another Satanic generation.

2 Nigerians arrested over $500K in stolen items in the U.S

Gregory Bland, 55; Temitayo David, 55; and Toyosi Ogunleye, 43, have been charged with theft by receiving.
Deputies said they began investigating after a California company was not paid for an order of 40 microscopes totaling $11,555.20 that was shipped to the warehouse on Eastgate Place in Snellville.

Investigators went to the warehouse on Feb. 23. They encountered Bland, who said he was allowed to live at the building in exchange for accepting packages for the owner, David, according to a sheriff’s office release.
During a search, investigators found the microscopes and other stolen items, including medical equipment and construction equipment, the release said.
