Witness tells court how $1m was found in ex- Chief of Air Staff, Alex Badeh’s wardrobe

Witness tells court how $1m was found in ex- Chief of Air Staff, Alex Badeh?s wardrobe

Anna Awe Akuson, a prosecution witness in the N3.9billion fraud trial involving Alex S. Badeh, former Chief of Air Staff, on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 told Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja how a search conducted on a property allegedly belonging to the defendant led to the recovery of $1million (One Million US Dollars) suspected to be proceeds of illicit deals.
Akuson, an operative of the EFCC, who testified as PW20, said that the money was found in a wardrobe at the upper apartment of the building located at No. 6 Ogun River Street, Off Danube Street, Maitama, Abuja.
Led in evidence by Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, counsel to the EFCC, Akuson said: “I am a cameraman working with the EFCC. On February 24, 2016, I was assigned to go on a search with some operatives. The team leader told me the properties (we were to search) belong to Alex Badeh.
“On reaching the place, I started my recording from outside. In the master bedroom (upstairs), we found a traveling bag covered with a pillow-case in the wardrobe. We opened the traveling bag and found US dollars inside. We brought the bag down and the money was counted.
“After the search, we returned to the office and I copied the visual from my camera to a hard drive, after which I burned it to a DVD disc”.
Thereafter, the prosecution sought to tender the certificate of identification and the DVD disc of the recording, but its admissibility was strongly objected to by Badeh’s counsel, Akin Olujimi, SAN.
While relying on Section 379 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, Olujimi argued, “I am for the first time seeing these documents in court now that the Registrar handed them over to me.
“There is no doubt that the prosecutor did not include these two documents in the information he filed before this court. That means we have been deprived of the rights of an accused person by the law. These two documents ought to have accompanied the information which the court has”.
Responding, Jacobs argued that the documents had been made available to the defence when the EFCC’s investigating officer (who testified as PW19) gave his evidence. However, he offered to avail the defence counsels with copies of the documents.
Olujimi further applied that the next date of hearing, which is March 1, 2018 be vacated to enable the defence study the documents and prepare their defence.
Consequently, Justice Abang adjourned to March 14, 2018 for continuation of trial.
Badeh is facing trial alongside Iyalikam Nigeria Limited, on a 10-count charge of money laundering to the tune of N3.9billion.
He, among other things, allegedly between January and December, 2013, used dollar equivalent of the sum of N1.4billion (One Billion, Four Hundred Million Naira) removed from the accounts of the Nigerian Air Force to purchase a mansion situated at No. 6, Ogun River Street, Off Danube Street, Maitama, Abuja.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) today announced dates for general elections in the country for the next 36 years, starting from 2019 to 2055.

Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mamood Yakubu, made the announcement at a consultative meeting with leaders of political parties in Abuja.

“In 2019, the dates are February 16 and March 2; in 2023, the dates are February 18 and March 4. In 2027, the dates are February 20 and March 6; in 2031, it is February 15 and March 1. In 2035, it is February 17 and March 3; in 2039, it is February 19 and March 5 and in 2043, it will hold on February 21 and March 7.  In 2047, it is February 15 and March 2; in 2051, it is February 18 and March 1; in 2055, it is February 20 and March 6,” Yakubu said.

He pointed out that in other democracies of the world, periods of elections are generally known and are not topics for speculation. Yakubu explained that the aim was to engender certainty in the election calendar and also to allow for long-term planning by the commission and all stakeholders.

He said that certainty in election calendar was necessary to match Nigeria’s democratic system with global best practices. The chairman said that in the last one week, INEC had received 108 applications from associations seeking to be registered as political parties.

He said that 66 of the applications did not meet the initial requirements, while 33 passed and had proceeded to the next stage.  He said that nine others were at the final stage of registration.  The INEC boss commended political parties for the roles they played in the governorship and National Assembly by-elections in Anambra, which ensured that the exercises were crisis-free.

Lagos PDP in crisis as members call for chairman?s resignation (Photos)

Some stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter are asking for the resignation of the state chairman, Hon. Moshood Salvador, over allegations that he is undermining the party and the leader of the party in the state, Chief Olabode George.

Expressing their grievances on Wednesday during the Lagos West Senatorial meeting of the PDP held at Alimosho, the protesters alleged that Salvador’s decision to alter the agreed 65-35 sharing formula between the former National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi’s group and Senator Ali Modu Sheriff’s group, is an affront against the leadership of former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Olabode George.

The protesters, led by the Youth Leader of Alimosho local government, Mr. Adewale Akinte, carried placards with different inscriptions like: “Salvador is working for APC”, “Go, Salvador, Go!”, “On 65-35 we stand”, “Salvador, where do you belong, APC or PDP?”, among others.

In a scenario which could only have been divinely orchestrated, the renowned unconventional musician, entertainer, social activist, and leader of the ‘Our mumu don do’ movement, Charly Boy, is gloriously led to Christ by the highly esteemed Regional Pastor, Christ Embassy Abuja, Reverend Tom Amenkhienan.
Having been invited to church several weeks earlier by a dear sister who met and engaged him on social media, Charly Boy promised that he will come to church. With persistent reminders and follow up, on Sunday, 25th February, he arrived Abuja from a journey and came straight to church from the airport with twelve members of his activist group.

He returned for an exclusive meeting with Reverend Tom on Tuesday 27th February, in the company of some members of his group. Overwhelmed by the expression of Christ's love, he appreciated our man of God, Reverend Dr. Chris Oyakhilome for his passion for Youth Development and Nation Building, as Reverend Tom highlighted the impact of the InnerCity Mission, Future Africa Leaders' Foundation, Campus Ministry, Global Youth Leaders' Forum and ReachOut Nigeria Campaign.

As an activist, Charly Boy constantly demands social and political changes, and accountability in governance in Nigeria. He identifies with, and advocates for the rights of the youth and the 'common man' in his usual unconventional style. He is indeed deeply passionate about this cause and spoke of it with tears in his eyes, hence his joy when he discovered the passion of our man of God, Pastor Chris for the youth, and the lasting impact being made. It opened his eyes to new and more effective ways to channel his passion.

Reverend Tom then ministered to him privately, and he gloriously accepted Christ and was born again. In his new found joy, he requested that Reverend Tom also prays for his group members. He beamed with smiles as Reverend Tom announced to them, 'CHARLY BOY IS BORN AGAIN!’ The news was received with joy and excitement, and Reverend Tom also went ahead to lead members of his group to Christ. He also gave them our ministry materials, and presented Charly Boy with a LoveWorld Plus decoder for his home.
What a glaring sign that our prayers have been answered! The Lord is doing great wonders in our midst. There is no limit to the length of the Master's love...it can reach the farthest soul, even those perceived as 'unreachable'. It is certainly the month of CHANGE! Glory to God!?

Catholic Bishop slams Nigerian parents that leave wealth behind for their children to inherit (video)

Catholic Bishop slams Nigerian parents that leave wealth behind for their children to inherit (video)

The video which is making its rounds on social media, shows Nigeria's Reverend Father George Ehusani, speaking against the culture of  inheritance. The clergyman argued that children that inherit wealth from their parents are never-do-wells while those whose parents never leave anything for them to inherit do better in life.
Last week, we were talking about people who foolishly make provision of houses for their children and grand children. It is the most foolish thing reason been that every child comes into this world with a brain. and the Lord has granted each child some ingenuity. When you provide everything your child needs, you stunt the growth of your child. You deny the world that unique gift that your child was to bring to the world. When you build houses for your child, and make provisions for a comfortable life for your child, the natural talents and gift the child comes into the world with, they remain dormant. It is a serious issue. because those who have accomplished the most in this world are not people whose parents provided properties for. Today, wealth is being created when a smart child, for example, in his father's garage takes a laptop and develops apps. They are among the richest people in the world. What did the father provide? Education and the child uses what he came into the world with.

Rwanda shuts down '700 unsafe and noisy churches'

Rwanda shuts down

About 700 churches have been closed down in Rwanda for failing to comply with building regulations and for noise pollution.

Most of them are small Pentecostal churches and one mosque was also closed. A government official told the BBC that some of the more than 700 buildings shut down have already reopened after they were aproved by inspectors.

Government official Justus Kangwagye told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme that they simply required the churches to meet "modest standards".
According to new regulations, all preachers must have had theological training before opening a church. Pentecostal churches, often run by charismatic preachers claiming to be able to perform miracles, have grown rapidly in many parts of Africa in recent years.  Some are massive, attracting thousands of worshippers each Sunday, but others consist of tiny structures built without planning permission and church leaders have at times been criticised for using loud public address systems to attract worshippers.

Some church premises exposed worshippers to unnecessary risks and could "cause danger to those worshipping," Mr Kangwagye told the Rwandan New Times newspaper.  The reported crackdown is being carried out by the local authorities with the support of the Rwanda Governance Board, according to the New Times.

Some 700 churches were thought to be operating illegally, the Rwanda Governance Board said in a recent statement. The vast majority of Rwandans are Christians but many also follow traditional practices.
