London airport shuts down after workers discover a World War II bomb

London airport shuts down after workers discover a World War II bomb

On Sunday, the London City Airport was closed after construction workers discovered a World War II bomb in the nearby Thames River.

"Following the discovery of a World War II ordnance in King George V Dock as part of planned development works, a 214m exclusion zone has been implemented. As a result, London City Airport is currently closed" the airport said in a statement.

Metropolitan police were called after the bomb was revealed. The Royal Navy was also deployed to the scene and confirmed the nature of the bomb, the police reported. "The airport is cooperating fully with the Met Police, Royal Navy and London Borough of Newham," the airport's statement added.

Operations to remove the bomb are ongoing. The Royal Navy implemented the 214-meter exclusion zone to "ensure that the ordnance can be safely dealt with whilst limiting any risk to the public," according to Met Police.

London City Airport is an international airport located in the Newham Borough of East London. The area was heavily industrial and highly populated during WWII. The Royal Docks, where the runways are now located, was a main entry point on the Thames River for goods and commerce. The airport, which is much smaller than London's Heathrow Airport, caters to business travelers heading to destinations in the UK, Europe and the United States.

Assemblies of God church pastor's son allegedly deflowers and impregnates chorister and his parents maltreat her as she's placed in their care

Assemblies of God church pastor

An Assemblies of God church pastor is being accused of maltreating a choir member who was impregnated by his son and brought to live with them.

Chijioke Paul Okeifufe alleged that 26-year-old Uche Rienne, the music director at his church and the son of the Assemblies of God church pastor deflowered a 19-year-old church member and got her pregnant. The pregnant girl was brought to Pastor Charles of Assemblies of God Church but he rejected her and suggested that she be sent to the village to stay there until she gives birth.

Chijioke further alleged that Pastor Charles, a native of Anambra state, instructed someone in the village, where the pregnant girl has been taken, to find a woman who will occasionally come and finger the girl to widen her private part so as to make for easy delivery. The girl has also been advised to do same to herself frequently.

Northern elders say Yaradua and Buhari were imposed on the region as they gather in Abuja to decide on a consensus candidate for 2019

Northern elders say Yaradua and Buhari were imposed on the region as they gather in Abuja to decide on a consensus candidate for 2019

Northern elders and stakeholders have gathered in Abuja to decide on a consensus candidate for 2019. The elders who said Yaradua and Buhari were imposed on the region by external forces and interests vowed to resist another imposition come 2019. They also faulted the Buhari government's failure resulting in killings, ethno-religious divisions associated with nepotism and blatant disregard to some sections of the nation’s constitution.

Speaking at the event, prominent Northern leader and one of the conveners of the forum, Dr Bello Haliru Mohammed, said: “After due consideration of current political situation in the country, it becomes highly expedient to convene a conversation of critical Northern Elders and stakeholders to deliberate on the best way forward for the region."
He added that it was necessitated by the need for the region to deliberate and reach an acceptable choice for representation, given that the 2019 presidency had been zoned to the North
“From what is apparent in the political arena today, it is clear that the major political operators have agreed that in the forthcoming 2019 general elections, it is the turn of the North to produce the president. And what we can see in the political arena, is that most political operators have agreed that the political leadership of our country should be zoned to the North according to our Constitution with regards to zoning and rotation. But from what we have seen earlier, it has always been zoned to the North but the decision on what to do and who to be has never been a Northern decision. What we observed is that the same trend is starting now. We have seen all kinds of movements coming up. If you look at what is happening now and remember what happened when it was the time of the North to produce president, President Umaru Yar’Adua of blessed memory was produced but was he really a Northern choice? At the end of the day, Yar’Adua had mishap and lost his life in the process and somebody else was also chosen, his Vice President. We knew the struggle that went on when it was decided that the presidency should leave the North. It wasn’t the northerners who decided that the Presidency should leave the North. We had to follow the bandwagon.
“The same thing happened in 2015,the North voted for the northern candidate but the decision on who should be the candidate wasn’t a northern decision. What we want is that this time around, let us have the opportunity to come together so that whatever is decided for the North, it is the Northern leaders who decide it and then we get support from other regions. If we are able to do that, then we should be able to produce a leadership for this country that would be just, equitable and lead us to nation’s development which is eluding us. That is the reason why we are here."

Suspected poacher eaten by pack of lions in South Africa

According to South African police, a suspected poacher has been eaten by a pride of lions, leaving just his head behind.

The unidentified man's remains were found lying next to a loaded hunting rifle in a private game reserve near the Kruger National Park in Limpopo province on Saturday morning.

According to the UK's Daily Mail, locals were first alerted to something amiss by the sound of screams and scattered gunshots, but it was too late to help.

EFCC Witness reveals how ex-governor, Danjuma Goje forged house approval to secure loan

EFCC Witness reveals how ex-governor, Danjuma Goje forged house approval to secure loan

The trial of Muhammad Danjuma Goje, former governor, Gombe State and a serving senator, on charges of financial misappropriation during his tenure as governor came up on Tuesday, February 6, 2017 before Justice B. Quadri at the Federal High Court, Jos, with PW24 testifying.

Goje is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in relation to alleged financial impropriety, including the contract on food supply to the state government house during his tenure as well as loan facilities taken from Access and Union Banks.

He is standing trial alongside Aliyu El-Nafaty, S. M. Dokoro and Sabo Muhammad Tumu. At the sitting, counsel to the EFCC, Wahab Shittu, filed an amended 21-count charge against the defendants and they were all served, though yet to take their pleas.

Meanwhile, Chris Owobu, an operative of the EFCC and a member of the team that investigated the alleged offence gave a blow-by-blow account of how the resolution purported to have been passed by the Gombe State House of Assembly to authorise the approval of the N5billion facility from access bank was forged.

The PW24 stated that when Danjuma Goje was governor, he got a N5billion facility from Access Bank without the approval of the Gombe State House of Assembly.

He added that Goje under investigation claimed that he got approval from Gombe State House of Assembly via a resolution passed by the House, but investigation revealed that on said day, the House did not sit nor pass any resolution regarding any loan as claimed by the former governor.

The judge, adjourned to April 10 - 11, 2018 for continuation of trial.

Northern group launches move to recall Senator Shehu Sani from the Senate over his criticism of Buhari and El-Rufai

Northern group launches move to recall Senator Shehu Sani from the Senate over his criticism of Buhari and El-Rufai

A group called Concerned Indigenes of Kaduna Central Senatorial District, has launched a move to recall Shehu Sani, the senator representing the district at the Senate. The plan to recall the senator was announced in a statement signed on behalf of the group by Aliyu Saidu Rigachikun, who claimed to have been the Deputy Director-General of Mr. Sani’s senatorial campaign in 2015.

According to the group, Mr. Sani was previously a politician with no significance and had failed twice to become a senator until he rode on the popularity of President Muhammadu Buhari, then a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to get to the Senate. Concerned Indigenes of Kaduna Central Senatorial District stated that since he won the election, Mr. Sani has continuously bitten the fingers that fed him.

“His first assignment as a senator was to ridicule the President's wife during the inauguration and he would later conspire against the President and the party during the National Assembly leadership elections. In doing so, he became a prominent figure in a Senate that is committed to undermining every honest effort of the Buhari administration, against the will of his constituents,” the group said.

It explained that those familiar with Mr. Sani were not surprised by his conduct, as he has built a reputation of using deceit and subterfuge cloaked in human rights activism. The group claimed that instead of investing his legislative resources and privileges to deepen the legislative process and uplifting the conditions of his constituents, he has become the leader of President Buhari's enemies.

He is accused of always amplifying the challenges being faced by the Buhari administration while ignoring the progress it has recorded so as to portray the government as incompetent and clueless.

“We in Kaduna Central would understand if Senator Shehu Sani restricts his diatribe to Governor El-Rufai, considering the senator's blind antagonism towards his state governor. The governor has so far responded to Senator Shehu Sani's insults with stoic silence. He has never allowed himself to be distracted, as he has put Kaduna State firmly on the path to sustainable progress and long-term prosperity. By working against the President and identifying with the enemies of the Buhari administration, Senator Shehu Sani has not only betrayed his constituents, he has declared war on them.  We the people of Kaduna Central unanimously support President Buhari. We sent Senator Shehu Sani to the Senate to work towards the success of the Buhari government, not work in direct opposition to it,” stated the Concerned Indigenes of Kaduna Central Senatorial District.

South Sudan's opposition figure, James Gatdet Dak sentenced to death

South Sudan

A former opposition party spokesman has been sentenced to death for treason by a court in South Sudan.

James Gatdet Dak, of the SPLA-IO, has been in detention since November 2016 when he stated his party’s support for the removal of the UN’s peacekeeping force commander in South Sudan on Facebook.

The UN troops, led by a Kenyan general, had been accused of failing to protect civilians during the war.  At the time, he was living in Kenya, where he had been granted refugee status. After the post was published, he was expelled from the country.  Back home in South Sudan, he was brought before a court and accused of treason, among other charges.

Last month, his lawyers said the trial was in violation of a ceasefire agreement between the government and rebels, which states that all political detainees should be freed. They then withdrew from the case in protest. He now has two weeks to appeal the verdict. Despite repeated truces between both warring parties, South Sudan’s conflict has continued.

Even fresh talks aimed at bring peace to the country are in jeopardy. This morning, delegates representing the rebels walked out of the discussions taking place in Ethiopia claiming government forces attacked their troops last night.
