Gambia's ex-President, Yahya Jammeh blacklisted by the US

Gambia
The US has sanctioned former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, who is accused of looting at least $50m (£37m) of state funds before leaving office last January. He only agreed to leave power after losing elections following pressure from West African mediators who sent troops in the country to force his hand and he's now living in exile in Equatorial Guinea.

A US Treasury statement said that during his 22 years in power he had a “history of engaging in serious human rights abuses and corruption”.
Jammeh created a terror and assassination squad called the Junglers that answered directly to him. Jammeh used the Junglers to threaten, terrorise, interrogate, and kill individuals whom Jammeh assessed to be threats. During his tenure, Jammeh used a number of corrupt schemes to plunder The Gambia’s state coffers or otherwise siphon off state funds for his personal gain. Ongoing investigations continue to reveal Jammeh’s large-scale theft from state coffers prior to his departure.”

Jammeh is among a host of world figures blacklisted by the President Donald Trump’s administration, including a business associate of Congolese President Joseph Kabila and an aide to South Sudan’s leader Salva Kiir.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin explained the new policy, saying the US wanted to take "a strong stand against human rights abuse and corruption globally by shutting these bad actors out of the US financial system.

"Treasury is freezing their assets and publicly denouncing the egregious acts they’ve committed, sending a message that there is a steep price to pay for their misdeeds.”

A jilted man stabbed his girlfriend to death in a shop after she rejected his marriage proposal. He then turned the knife on himself in an unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide.
Shocking photos show the man writhing on the floor in pain, covered in blood after he stabbed himself. He then begged onlookers to kill him, saying, "finish me off" as shoppers and the mother of his slain girlfriend denounced him for his brutal act.
His 23-year-old girlfriend's body can also be seen under a freezer in the grocery store. According to witnesses, she had been stabbed 17 times. The man, 26, had followed her into the shop in the Russian city of Ufa, in Bashkortostan region. Earlier, he had waited for her near her house and she had tried to flee from him, according to neighbours. Then he had approached her outside the shop with a bunch of flowers and asked her to marry him, but she refused, and said she wanted to end their relationship. He then tried to attack her and she ran into the store shouting "Help!"
He followed her screaming, "If I can't have you, no-one else will" before taking out a knife and stabbing her multiple times. He then plunged the knife into his own chest.

Reports say the girlfriend's parents had been against a marriage between the pair because he had a criminal record.
A statement from the Russian Investigative Committee, which deals with serious crime said the man stabbed the woman out of jealousy.
"A man stabbed his girlfriend out of jealousy, because she refused to continue the relations with him," it said. The suspect is in hospital in a grave condition. A murder case has been opened."
A saleswoman at the shop said: "We are still in shock. What happened here was a nightmare. It was terrible, he began to knife her. And then stab himself. A policeman said she died on the spot."
In shocking video footage a man holding a camera can be heard saying: "He just entered the shop. This scum was going to flee, I held him. Scum, Looks like he stabbed himself too?"
He then asks the killer: "Did you do anything to yourself? Or not? Did you stab yourself? Asshole."
A woman - believed to be the dead woman's mother - is heard saying: "He's a convict... He wanted my daughter to marry him. And she did not want so he stabbed her. Asshole!"

Fuel Scarcity: NNPC Increases daily supply from to 80million litres

Fuel Scarcity:?NNPC Increases daily supply from?to?80million litres?
Today, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, increased the supply of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, across the country from 30 million litres to 80 million litres per day.

In a statement released in Abuja, the NNPC disclosed that the hike in the product supply became necessary after the current hiccup in fuel supply was noticed few days back. It added that the increase would ensure that the fuel crisis comes to an end this week.

Maikanti Baru, Group Managing Director of the NNPC, disclosed this shortly before the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Corporation and the Benue State Government on the Agasha-Guma Bio-fuels Projects, in Abuja.

The biofuels project is expected to create one million direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians on completion and would also produce about 84 million litres of fuel ethanol annually. The NNPC said that it plans to mobilize to site by the first quarter of 2018.  Baru blamed the current fuel crisis on the rumour about a planned increase in the price of petrol, which made some unscrupulous marketers, wanting to cash in on the situation, to suddenly start hoarding products.

He said, “But we swiftly swung into action by doubling our supply nationwide. At the time the rumour started, we had about 30 day sufficiency. The normal daily supply to the nation is 700 trucks, equaling about 27 million to 30 million litres per day.”  Baru noted that the NNPC had enough products sufficiency that will last up to 30 days, adding that at least a billion litre petrol laden cargoes were heading to Nigeria shores at the end of December, which would return the country to a 30-day-plus sufficiency.

Turkey Bans New Year Celebrations for security reasons

Turkey Bans New Year Celebrations for security reasons

Authorities in Turkey will not allow New Year celebrations at Istanbul’s iconic Taksim Square for security reasons. Ismail Kilic, local police chief of Istanbul’s Beyoglu district, said security measures had been doubled this year following a string of attacks over the past two years.

“Measures for New Year will be at the highest level,” he was quoted as saying by state-run news agency Anadolu. Turkey has suffered a series of terror attacks attributed to Kurdish militants and the Islamic State group, including a shooting at popular Istanbul nightclub Reina during a New Year 2016-17 party in which 39 people were killed.

“We will double the measures because the Reina assailant changed his location having seen the measures at Taksim,” Kilic said.

EFCC releases Innoson chairman, Innocent Chukwuma, on bail

EFCC releases Innoson chairman, Innocent Chukwuma, on bail
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has released Nnewi, Anambra-State born Industrialist, Chief Innocent Chukwuma on bail. A statement by the agency says the business man who runs a local auto assembly plant was arrested on Tuesday December 19, 2017 at his Enugu residence, following his refusal to respond to invitations by the Commission, after initially being granted administrative bail by the Commission, while his surety could also not be found. The statement in part reads
''Unfortunately the industrialist resisted arrest and stirred controversy by bringing six truck-loads of thugs to block the entrance to his Plot W1, Industrial Layout, Abakaliki Road, Emeni, Enugu, home. This was after he initially misled the Police Command by informing them that his home had been invaded by armed robbers and kidnappers despite the fact that operatives of the Commission duly identified themselves to policemen guarding his home.
His unruly thugs encircled and manhandled operatives of the Commission who had gone to effect the arrest. Consequently, a distress call was sent to the Commission’s Enugu Office for reinforcement.
In all of this, the Commission’s operatives acted with decorum and civility. No one was manhandled or assaulted by the EFCC team, and not a single shot was fired, despite the provocation.
Chief Chukwuma and his brother, Charles Chukwuma (who is still at large), are being investigated by the Insurance and Capital Market Fraud Section of the Commission’s office in Lagos over matters bordering on N1, 478, 366, 859.66 fraud and forgery. The industrialist, among other infractions, allegedly used forged documents to secure tax waivers.''.
