President Buhari hints at seeking re-election in 2019

President Buhari hints at seeking re-election in 2019

President Buhari last night gave a hint of seeking re-election in 2019. He gave the hint while he was speaking to the Nigerian community in Cote D'Ivoire where he is attending the 5th European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Summit. President Buhari told the Nigerians that he arrived late for the meeting because he was waiting for the state governors of Akwa Ibom and  Bauchi states to accompany him because of their electoral value.
“First I want to apologise for keeping you for too long sitting, this is because I insisted on the governors attending this meeting. This is why I came along with them so that when we are going to meet you, when you are going to meet the rest of Nigerians, if you tell them that their governors were in the company of the president, I think that will be another vote for me in the future. I’m very pleased that they were able to turn up,” he said.

Patient found dead in hospital toilet three days after leaving ward to go for cigarette

Patient found dead in hospital toilet three days after leaving ward to go for cigarette

A patient was found dead in a hospital toilet three days after leaving his ward to go for a cigarette, an inquest heard today.

Jonathan Earp, 32, had been on admission at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, England with suspected deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. On July 7, Earp expressed a wish to discharge himself and a medical assessment confirmed he had the mental capacity to make his own decisions. Earp, however, stayed in the ward and later on that day left for a cigarette but did not return. He was known to leave the ward to have a cigarette from time to time.

When he wasn't seen hours later, police and site management were alerted but he was still not found until July 10 in a disabled toilet in the hospital. The inquest heard that a post mortem found that a number of drugs were in his system, not all prescribed - but further evidence is to be collected on this. An inquest into his death will be held next spring, a coroner ruled today. It will focus on what happened between the time he left his ward in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on July 7 this year and when he was found dead in a disabled toilet in the building on July 10.
Gloucestershire Police have ruled out foul play but have referred themselves to the Independent Police Complaints Commission because they had received a call expressing concern for Mr Earp's welfare after he disappeared on July 7. The Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has also carried out its own internal investigation into why Mr Earp's body was not found sooner.

"Its a slap in the face if Nigerians can be treated in this manner" - Senate reacts to Libya Slave trade

"Its a slap in the face if Nigerians can be treated in this manner" - Senate reacts to Libya Slave trade

The Nigerian Senate has reacted to the Libyan slave trade auctions.

At plenary today, after reviewing the gruesome images and videos that have populated the news media, the Senate took action on the ongoing slave trade in Libya.

In a statement released moments ago, 'we passed a Resolution calling on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the Libyan Ambassador to Nigeria to discuss ending the ongoing Libyan slave trade of black Africans -- many of them of Nigerian descent'.

The Motion titled “Urgent Need to Protect Nigerian Citizens from the Libya Slavery Auctions” also called on Mr. President to use the opportunity of the ongoing EU-AU Summit in Abidjan to table the matter before the Libyan delegation.

As a country it is a slap in the face if Nigerians can be treated in this manner. Other countries are taking necessary actions to bring back their citizens, we need to be doing the same. In this regard, we resolved to condemn in totality the current depravity and sheer animalism being exhibited by the Libyan slave traders, who are selling fellow Africans as slaves.

'We also urged the federal government to urgently investigate how many Nigerians are affected and urgently commence the process of repatriation and rehabilitation of Nigerian citizens caught up in these despicable treatment and human rights abuses'.

Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics suspends 15-day old nationwide strike

Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics suspends 15-day old nationwide strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has suspended its nationwide strike 15 days after the industrial action began.

Usman Duste, the National President of ASUP made the announcement today during the union’s 14th National Delegates Conference at the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi state. He said the decision to suspend the strike followed the series of meetings held between the leadership of the union and the Federal Government.

According to him, both parties agreed to a Memorandum of Settlement and Action (MoS) on each of the issues raised by the union.  “The union considered the suspension to give an opportunity for implementation of the content of Memorandum of Settlement and Action, and shall be reviewed according to the timelines outlined in the MoS,” Duste said.

The decision to commence an indefinite strike was the outcome of the National Executive Council meeting of ASUP which held on November 11 at the Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna State.  According to the union, the industrial action followed the failure of the Federal Government to implement all the agreements it entered with them since 2016.  Some of the demands included non-implementation of the NEEDS Assessment Report and shortfalls in personnel releases and withdrawal of allowances.

Others were non-passage of the amended bill of the Polytechnic Act, alleged infractions in the appointment of rectors, as well as improving the conditions of state-owned institutions among other issues.  The union had lamented that despite the long period given to the government to address some of the issues it had raised, government did not consider it necessary to address the demands for improved funding of polytechnic education in the country.

Dutse had also told reporters after the Council meeting that ASUP had given government sufficient time to implement all the agreements, saying they had no choice than to embark on an indefinite strike after the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum issued earlier.

“On October 24, a reconciliation meeting was convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour in Abuja. The ministry in the eye of the storm, the Federal Ministry of Education, was poorly represented that no memorandum of action was agreed on.  “This clearly shows the level of disdain and disrespect with which the issues of the sector are being handled by the relevant agencies. In view of the above, our union resolved in its emergency meeting of NEC on October 31, 2017 to commence an indefinite and comprehensive strike effective from November 13, 2017,” he had said.

Nigerian Man gets his parents arrested after he came back from Italy to discover they’ve been sending him pictures of a fake house he was sending them money to build

Nigerian Man gets his parents arrested after he came back from Italy to discover they?ve been sending him pictures of a fake house he was sending them money to build

A Nigerian man based in Italy has reportedly gotten his 65 year old father and 56 year old mum arrested for allegedly sending him pictures of a fake house they were building for him while in Italy. Facebook user, Nnamdi Victor who shared the story online wrote;
'One of us just locked his parents up in police cell. His 65 year old father and 56 year old mother slept in police cell last night with an instruction that anyone who comes close to bail them should be locked up too. I know what the parents did are wrong but I have been pleading with him since last week not to toe this path. There are many ways to solve issues like this.
If your parents do same to you, would you have done exactly what he did or you would have handled it differently? Hear him :
"Ben, I'm sorry I have to do what I did. You won't understand how painful it is to be hustling here only to find out that my stupid and greedy parents were just wasting all my efforts on frivolities. Like you already know, I have been in Italy doing all kinds of menial jobs just to put food on my table and make some savings. I have been here for six good years but I have never visited Nigeria. I have been sending some cash to my parents to help me buy two plots of land and start building on it for all of us because we have suffered enough as a family, paying rent always.
Ben do you know that my foolish parents only bought one plot of land and nothing has been going on there apart from the initial foundation.? In fact they started the foundation recently when they knew I will be visiting Nigeria. They have been sending me fake pictures of my house. Bro I'm mad. I don't know what they used all the money for. They don't know how I managed to make these savings. Omg I just wasted six years in Italy without anything to show for it. If I can't trust my own parents, who then can I trust?
I will spend the remaining money I have with me on police to make sure they remained there until I go back to start a new hustle. Please Ben if you have a trusted lady in her late thirties who can build with me, kindly hook me up to her. I can't trust these foolish parents of mine again."

Photos: Suspected cultists surrender their arms in Ikorodu

It was a day of joy in the sleepy town of Imota, Lagos, when their sons and daughters who hitherto, foister a reign of terror on the community, voluntarily renounced their membership to some clandestine confraternity.  The event which took place today November 29, 2017 at the palace of the Oba of Imota, Oba Ajibade Agoro, Ranodu of imota Lagos state. The event which attracted distinguished sons and daughters of Imota as well as friends and well wishers, thronged the venue to celebrate with the Oba whose fatherly love to the erstwhile deviants contributed in no small way to their eventual repentance.
The commissioner of police Lagos state, Ag. Cp. Edgal I. Imohimi whose efforts, regular visits, and admonitions finally paid off, was full of joy. He however attributed the success to God Almighty, and also to the policing ideology of the Inspector General of police on community policing and safety partnership. He stated that he is not only a student of the Inspector General of police school of thought, but an ardent practitioner of the philosophy of community policing which has yielded great dividend in Imota leading to the denouncing of cultism and gangsterism by over 300 youths of the land.Recall that a similar event took place In the neighboring community of Ijede a forth night ago.
The commissioner of police further thanked the Oba, the legislator representing Ikorodu constituency 11 Hon Solaja Saka Agoro and the local government chairman for putting machinery in place to rehabilitate the former cultists. He also encouraged those still under ground to surface and benefit from the programme.
The Cp, before his departure, directed the Area Commander Area 'N' ACP Garba Ahmed, to profile, document and obtain the biometrics of the erstwhile cult members for record purpose
