93-year-old World War II veteran elected as Mayor in New Jersey

93-year-old World War II veteran elected as Mayor in New Jersey
Vito Perillo, a 93-year-old World War II veteran will hold elected office for the first time in his long life after winning the race for mayor in a New Jersey borough on Tuesday.

He arrowly unseated the current mayor of Tinton Falls, Gerald Turning, winning 53 percent of the vote in the nonpartisan municipal race. Perillo, who served with the US Navy in the South Pacific from 1944 - 1947, garnered 300 more votes than Turning, according to unofficial election results from the Monmouth County Clerk's Office.

Perillo, who has been a resident of Tinton Falls for more than 50 years, ran on a platform calling for lower taxes and more transparency. He was partially driven to run after a whistleblower lawsuit against the police department ended in a settlement that cost taxpayers $1.1 million.

He say "as mayor, I will ensure your voice is heard when it comes to making important financial decisions and create a culture of accountability".

Perillo said when he campaigned, residents of Tinton Falls were eager to hear his message and even "encouraged him.

"They thought my plans made good sense. They believed in my message" he said.

''You have no right to attack a pastor on church issue''- Apostle Suleman replies Daddy Freeze, speaks on tithing controversy

The President of the Omega Fire Ministries worldwide (OFM), Apostle Johnson Suleman, has lent his voice to the burning issue on tithing stoked by an OAP, Daddy Freeze.
Below is his reaction during a church service;
“Let it be clear that if anyone is not a pastor, he has no right to attack a pastor on church issue. He should leave everything to God. I only laugh. Somebody who is not a doctor cannot teach a certified doctor how to go about doing his job; he will just be laughed at. Someone who is not a journalist can’t teach a true journalist how he should do his work; they will just be laughing at him.

I wouldn’t have spoken on the issue but you don’t argue with a man whose mind is already made up on any issue. It is futile. And I’m not going to confuse anybody to pay tithe, no. if you attend my church and you decide not to pay tithe, it’s left to you. In my church they don’t pay me allowance. I live on my personal businesses and I write books. So far, I have written 52 books that are inspirational and I’m still writing. If you write books that are inspirational, believers and non-believers will buy. It is not as if it is only church members that buy pastors’ books. That alone is enough to sustain any pastor. So, you don’t just jump to criticize any pastor for buying private jets of expensive cars because you think it is tithe that they use to buy them.

If you asked me, there is nothing wrong with tithing. But tithes should be used by pastors to maintain Christianity, assist the poor in the church, the vulnerable and the stranded. Not that everything should go into the pastor’s pocket, that’s wrong. Every pastor should be on allowance.

That young man does not deserve a response; in fact, I’m not talking because of him but because my Papa, Pastor Adeboye had spoken, I’m speaking on the issue. Now, if it requires that we go into a debate, let’s have it. Yes, your tithe is not a license to make heaven but it is an acknowledgment of God’s mercy in your life. But because Papa Adeboye corrected the wrong notion and the young man dared to respond to him, I felt it was insulting. This is not about sentiment or emotion, it is about commonsense. You don’t respond to an elder in certain manner, especially a man of Pastor Adeboye’s standing.

There are things people shouldn’t just dabble into especially when it is not their field. Even if you mobilize the whole world against tithing, you will only end up being counterproductive because this is not your field. Men of God do not need to react to such issues because like I said earlier, once somebody has made up his mind on a position, nobody should argue with such a man. My reaction to such a man is, if that is your position, keep it, continue with what you believe but don’t confuse people to believe what you believe.”

Former Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed, indicted in $300m timber scandal

Former Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed, indicted in $300m timber scandal
Former Minister of Environment now UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has been accused of granting illegal permits to Chinese firms to import endangered Nigerian timber when she was in office. Mohammed served as Nigeria's Minister of Environment from November 2015 to February this year.
According to AFP, investigations by Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), a Washington-based environmental campaigning organization, suggests that Mohammed provided documents used by Chinese importers to clear more than $300 million worth of rosewood logs (timbers) used in making luxury furniture. The agency alleged that the former Minister on January 16th, shortly before she left office, 'hurriedly' signed some export certificates.
The agency alleged that some officials in the Ministry of Environment were paid over $1 million to help the importers release the rosewood, which was put on a list of endangered species last year by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
When contacted, Mohammed through the UN spokesman Farhan Haq categorically rejected the allegations of fraud. According to Haq, the signing of the permits for the rosewood exports was delayed after Mohammed insisted "that stringent due process was followed,".
"She says that she signed the export certificates requested before the ban only after due process was followed and better security watermarked certificates became available," he added.

Shortly after unveiling the statue of the Liberian President, Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, was asked by a journalist while he is building statues and he replied
"To immortalize people so our children yet unborn can read a piece of them. History is dying in Africa. We must keep history alive. In the next 100 years to come, most of us will not be here but this will stand for children to read stories and mold their character. Shocking! Lawyer to Ikoyi billions whistle blower lifts the lid on his despicable treatment at the hands of EFCC

Shocking! Lawyer to Ikoyi billions whistle blower lifts the lid on his despicable treatment at the hands of EFCC
According to an Exclusive Premium Times report, the whistle blower who led the authorities to the billions found in Ikoyi has been treated shabbily by the SSS, EFCC and the government. His lawyer, Yakubu Galadima claims his client has received death threats and was remanded in a psychiatric institution by the EFCC on the grounds that he is mentally unstable. He also claims his client is due 850 million not 350 million as the amount recovered was 17 billion. He also disclosed that he has taken responsibility for his client's upkeep because the whistle blower lives in penury. Read the report below.

A lawyer to the whistle-blower that helped in the recovery of $43.5 million, £27,800 and N23.2 million at No. 16 Osborne Road, Flat 7B Osborne Towers in Ikoyi, Lagos, has said his client is yet to be paid his due reward five months after a court ordered a final forfeiture of the money.
Reacting to a claim by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission that his client is now a millionaire, the lawyer, Yakubu Galadima, told PREMIUM TIMES on Friday that several efforts to get the money have been unsuccessful.
“The truth is that this guy has not been paid a penny,” Mr. Galadima said.
“In fact, from April till date, the guy has been living under my meagre resources, his security was just zero. I’ve had to relocate this guy from one place to another so nobody knows his whereabouts.”
The Nigerian government in December 2016 adopted a policy on whistleblowing to encourage citizens to report financial and other related crimes to relevant authorities.
According to the policy, whistleblowers whose revelations lead to the recovery of money are entitled to as much as five percent of the recovered sum.
Since the introduction of the policy, the government has recovered about N17billion, according to the EFCC.
Some of those monies had been recovered from LEGICO Plaza in Victoria Island, Lagos; the luxury apartment in Ikoyi; a building in Kaduna belonging to Andrew Yakubu, a former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation; among others.
Last June, the Nigerian government announced it had released about N375.8million for payment of 20 whistleblowers who provided information for the recovery of over N11.6 billion.
On Wednesday, while speaking at the 7th session of the Conference of State Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, Ibrahim Magu, the EFCC acting chairman, said the individual who helped uncover the Ikoyi apartment money had become a millionaire.
“We are currently working on the young man because this is just a man who has not seen one million Naira of his own before.
“So he is under counseling on how to make use of the money and also the security implication. We don’t want anything bad to happen to him after taking delivery of his entitlement. He is a national pride.”
‘The true position’
Mr. Galadima said the EFCC boss’s “position is not correct.”
According to the lawyer, the Ikoyi whistle-blower accompanied by friends had approached him in early April this year to inform him about their suspicion of a huge amount of money stashed away in one of the apartments at the Osborne Towers.
“In fact, what came to their mind was to go and burgle the place since they know the security network of the house,” said Mr. Galadima.
“I was the one that advised them that, you don’t do that because that will amount to crime. That since there is a policy of the federal government, let us exploit that avenue.
“I took them, we went to the Commission, discussed with them, they said they were going to give the boy a form to fill and that if the story turns out to be false that the guy will go to jail. We said no problem, we undertook and we signed.
“The next day, we went to the house, all of us were all shivering thinking there was nothing inside. And then we started to discover all sorts of money in different denominations, pounds, dollars, naira. These monies were all recovered and taken to the Commission. It was counted. They brought a staff of CBN and he came and counted the money.”
In April, the EFCC headed to a federal court in Lagos seeking for the forfeiture of the money to the Nigerian government and, in June, Justice Muslim Hassan ordered a permanent forfeiture of the money to the government.
The judge had earlier granted an interim forfeiture giving 14 days for anyone interested in the funds to appear before it and show reason why the money should not be permanently forfeited to the federal government.
Nobody appeared before the court to claim the money.
“The moment the final forfeiture was made, I wrote a comprehensive letter to Magu, attaching the judgement, and said court has made a final forfeiture, where is the reward and commission of the whistleblowers?” Mr. Galadima continued.
“In fact, the letter was addressed to the Acting President then through the Office of the Acting Chairman since the money was recovered by the EFCC. That was the first letter.
“A month later, I wrote a reminder. It was after that reminder that they said we should bring the boy to Abuja. We took the boy to Abuja, he had one on one interface for the first time with the acting president. We went together with the acting chairman.
“The acting president congratulated him for a job well done and that with the money they’ll pay him, he’s now a millionaire. We all laughed.”
Mad whistle-blower
Mr. Galadima said while he was out of country on vacation, his client contacted him on the phone and told him about receiving threats to his life.
“The day we went to the office of the acting president, they gave him a number that he can reach them at any time. So he has been communicating with the acting president. Following the threats, they detailed some SSS to be working around him,” the lawyer said.
The whistle-blower was later taken to the SSS facility at Shangisha, Lagos, and given an apartment.
“Because the guy had always been looking forward to see(ing) this money and it wasn’t forthcoming, he started shouting. When he started shouting, they said he’s mad, that he’s having a mental problem.
“The SSS people called me and said I should come and carry my luggage. They brought him to the EFCC and abandoned him there. The EFCC people called me that I should come and carry my client.”
On getting to the Commission’s office, Mr. Galadima said he was informed of his client’s mental illness and plans to take him to the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Yaba.
“I said he’s not mad, that it’s because you people are holding his money that’s why he’s reacting this way. They insisted the guy is mad, that they have to take him to a psychiatric hospital, they bundled this man. I said ok, if that’s how to prove that he’s not mad, no problem, we went to the psychiatric hospital in Yaba.
“They injected him and said they have to monitor him for a month. They monitored him for a month. The day they were going to release him, the EFCC called me again to come and carry my “critical asset.” This was a boy I never knew from Adam….. I said ok, I went to the EFCC the guy said he’s ok there’s no problem anymore, they handed him over to me three weeks ago. Ever since then, I pay money into his account on a weekly basis for his upkeep.”
Phone calls and text messages to Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC spokesperson, were not answered.
The phone lines of Laolu Akande, the Senior Special Assistant to the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, did not go through.
On October 12, Mr. Galadima wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari seeking the prompt payment of the commission due to his client.
“I have written twice while you are away receiving treatment to the Acting President through the office of the Acting Chairman of the EFCC on 7th June 2017 and 24th July 2017 respectively,” Mr. Galadima stated in a copy of the letter he made available to PREMIUM TIMES.
“Please note that the discovery (of the money) was a result of my client’s efforts and consequently, I respectfully urge Your Excellency to use your good offices to facilitate the prompt payment of the reward/commission due to my clients.”
Mr. Galadima said that contrary to media reports that his client’s commission is N350 million, the correct figure is N850 million.
“Because the money discovered was about N17 billion and not N13 billion that is being declared. It was calculated as at the time the money was recovered.”

Mom who once married her son, charged with incest after marrying her daughter
.
An Oklahoma woman who married her biological mother has pleaded guilty to incest. Court records show 26-year-old Misty Spann of Duncan pleaded guilty Tuesday in Stephens County District Court.
.
Under the deal, she was sentenced to 10 years of probation. Her mother, 44-year-old Patricia Spann, has pleaded not guilty to incest. Prosecutors say the two married in 2016.
.
Court records show the marriage was annulled last month at the request of Misty Spann on the grounds of fraud and illegality. Patricia Spann has said she thought the marriage was legal because she had lost custody of her daughter and two sons years ago and isn’t listed on their birth certificates.
.
Prosecutors say Patricia Spann also married one of her sons. That marriage was annulled in 2010.
