Nigeria loses N127bn to cyber crime - Senate President, Bukola Saraki

Nigeria loses N127bn to cyber crime -?Senate President, Bukola Saraki
Today, Senate President Bukola Saraki spoke at Nigeria’s first Legislative Stakeholders Conference on ICT and Cyber security in Abuja where he said Nigeria has lost about N127 billion to cybercrime.

He said the loss reflects the hole created in the economy by cyber crime amounting to 0.08 per cent of the Gross Domestic product (GDP. “It is indeed ironic that while internet penetration in Nigeria is tentative at best, hovering at just over the 90 million people mark, a percentage of 47.7 per cent, internet-facilitated crime seems to be growing. Our cyber borders are very porous, indeed,” Saraki said.

He also said efforts to revive the economy must necessarily include counter-measures to minimise the losses and shore up the country’s cyber security architecture to better repel attacks.

Saraki further said that cyber attacks had in 2016 reached unprecedented level, globally with no sign of a downward trend. “In recent times, we have seen the virulent use to which criminals and other shadowy agents have put the cyber space. The cyber ecosystem has been weaponised and manipulated to devastating effect to undermine democratic processes, influence voting in elections and whip up tension and divisions between societal groups. Over 200,000 cyber attacks were recorded in one single day earlier this year all over the world. Major international financial institutions have had their systems crippled for up to 48 hours after being targeted by criminals using Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), among other methods.”

He said such attacks threatened economic activities, adding that personal data of millions of people were compromised by cyber criminals, who demanded the payment of ransom before hijacked data could be released. “Kidnapping, already a scourge in the Nigerian physical space, is also becoming a problem in the virtual realm as ‘cyber-kidnapping’ of encrypted data poses a clear and present danger to our economic viability. The Senate President described cybercrime as an ever-mutating monster, constantly growing new tentacles and taking on new formations. Not so long ago, one web-based Ponzi scheme succeeded in entrapping thousands of Nigerians with promises of quick gains. Investors were left counting the costs when the bubble burst, while those responsible moved on to new pastures. There was no accountability anywhere” he said.

Disgraced politician Anthony Weiner checks into prison for 21-month sentence for sexting a 15-year-old girl
Former congressman, Anthony Weiner checked into prison this morning after his conviction for sexting an underage girl, a source close to the disgraced politician has confirmed.
Speaking exclusively to RadarOnline.com, an insider said:
“He was cooperative, and is looking forward to getting the help he needs, adding that the facility — Devens Federal Medical Center in Ayres, Massachusetts offers specialty treatment for sex offenders.
The Bureau of Prisons describes FMC Devens as “an in-house psychology department that offers inmates counseling for depression and suicidal ideation, as well as sex-offender and drug-addiction programs.”
Weiner, 53, the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton's former adviser,  pleaded guilty to one charge of transferring obscene material to a minor in May 2017. The charges stem from communications that the former congressman had with a 15-year-old girl on social media sites between January and March 2016.
In September, a federal judge sentenced Weiner to 21-months behind bars and he will do three years of supervised release and pay a $10,000 fine.

Robert Mugabe sacks vice-president for being 'disloyal'

Robert?Mugabe sacks vice-president for being
Zimbabwe's Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been removed from his post for being disloyal.

Information Minister Simon Khaya Moyo says 75-year old Mnangagwa had displayed "traits of disloyalty" making it more likely that President Robert Mugabe's wife Grace will follow in her husband's footsteps as leader of Zimbabwe. She had earlier called on her husband to remove his vice-president.

"Mr Mnangagwa's conduct in discharge of his duties is inconsistent with the responsibilities," the information minister said.

Mr Mnangagwa, a former intelligence chief, had been a leading candidate to succeed President Mugabe. His sacking means Grace Mugabe is expected to be appointed vice-president at a special congress of the ruling Zanu-PF party next month.

Over '800,000 companies in Nigeria have never paid taxes' - Kemi Adeosun

Nigeria's Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun has revealed that over 800,000 companies in the country, including government contractors, have never paid any taxes,

In a statement from her office, she also said that only 14 million Nigerians, out of an economically active base of 70 million, paid taxes.  Of the 14 million, more than 95% were salary earners in the formal sector, but only 241 people paid personal income taxes amounting to about $65,500 (£50,000) in 2016, Ms Adeosun said.

There is "systematic tax evasion at all levels", and the government planned to step up efforts to increase tax collection, she added.  This would help reduce government reliance on oil revenue, Ms Adeosun said.

Lagos State ranked as the second cheapest city in the world for expatriates (photos)

Lagos State ranked as the second cheapest city in the world for expatriates
According to a report by the Economic Intelligence Unit today, Lagos State has been ranked the second cheapest city in the world for expatriates.

Lagos which fell 16 places to 132nd place on the world priciest cities index joins Kazakhstan’s Almaty at the bottom.  The report says, “Although Nigeria has been attracting significant interest and investment in recent years, the fall in global oil prices has driven a collapse in the value of the Nigerian naira, which pushed down relative pricing, despite strong local inflation. The relative cost of living in Lagos has more than halved since 2008, which might signal renewed interest from foreign investors, with price levels so low by international standards“.

The Worldwide Cost of Living 2017 report saw Asian cities take five of the top ten spots, thanks to a sustained recovery in the strength of the Japanese yen that propelled Tokyo and Osaka back into the top ten, alongside Singapore and Seoul.

Singapore was ranked the most expensive city in the world for expatriates for the fourth consecutive year.  Western Europe accounted for a further four cities, with stalwarts Zurich and Geneva in third and seventh position respectively.  Paris, the only Eurozone city, came in eighth position and the Danish capital Copenhagen, which pegs its currency to the Euro, rounded off the top ten.

New York was the lone North American representative, falling to ninth position owing to a slight weakening of the U.S. dollar, which also affected the position of other US cities.  In spite of topping the ranking, “Singapore still offers relative value in some categories, especially compared with its regional peers,” the report said.

Nigeria's Michael Emenalo quits his post as Chelsea technical director after 10 years

Chelsea Football Club today announced that technical director Michael Emenalo has decided to step down from his role.

Michael arrived at Chelsea in 2007, and in 10 years at Stamford Bridge has contributed to a period of remarkable success for the first team and Academy.  Since 2011, he has been the club’s technical director, supporting the work of the first team management, leading the club's international and domestic scouting network and assisting in driving the technical programmes of our Academy and international youth network.

According to a statement on the club's official website, 'during Michael’s time with Chelsea, we have lifted three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the League Cup, Europa League and of course, the Champions League in 2012, becoming the first London club to do so.  Additionally, we have been crowned FA Youth Cup champions six times in eight years and lifted the UEFA Youth League twice, supplying key squad members for England’s Under-20 and Under-17 World Cup successes this year'.

Announcing his decision, Emenalo said: ‘This has been a very difficult decision to make, but one I believe is right for both myself and my family, and the club. I have had the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented people in the world of sport over the past 10 years, and I will depart incredibly proud of the achievements we have made. I wish Chelsea every success and look forward to following the club’s future triumphs from afar.’

Chelsea Chairman Bruce Buck added: ‘It is with regret that the owner and board of directors accepted Michael’s resignation this week. He has had a tremendous impact on the club over the past 10 years and this is evident in everything we have achieved. We are sorry to see him go but understand his desire to move on and explore new challenges.’

Lagos begins enforcement against tax defaulters

Lagos begins enforcement against tax defaulters
The Lagos State Government on Monday directed all its revenue agencies to ensure prompt payment of taxes and also commence enforcement of payment by all tax defaulters with immediate effect.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, in a statement, lamented that many residents were not fulfilling their civic obligation of paying their taxes and that the prevailing situation would adversely affect government’s infrastructural renewal drive currently ongoing across the State.

Ayorinde therefore said that Government had concluded plans to go all out to enforce the tax laws so as to bring more Lagosians into the tax net.

It would be recalled that Governor Ambode during a forum recently expressed concern that only about 600,000 Lagos residents are up to date in paying their taxes, a situation he said was not helpful to scale up provision of infrastructure and other amenities for the people.
Ayorinde said the Government remains committed to completing all ongoing projects on schedule, but that it was largely dependent on prompt payment of taxes by residents in the State.

He listed some of the major ongoing projects to include the Oshodi Transport Interchange, reconstruction of the Oshodi International Airport Road, network of roads in Epe to link Ijebu Ode, construction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Lane from Abule Egba to Oshodi as well as the construction of the Pen Cinema flyover.

He also said the Government has also commenced the construction of over 20 network of roads within the boundaries of Lagos and Ogun States to ease movement and enhance business activities between the two States.

He listed the 20 roads to include Ikola Road with Odo Obasanjo Bridge – 6.4km (from Ipaja/Command to Ilo River); Ogunseye Road – 1.75km (from Ajasa/Command to Ikola Road); Oko Filling Road – 1.5km (from AIT to Ilo River); Osenatu Ilo road – 620m (from Ibari Road to Ilo River); Amikanle road – 3.1km (from AIT to Ogunseye Road); Aina Aladi road – 1.9km (from AIT to Ilo River) and Aiyetoro Road with a bridge– 1.4km (from New Market/Ishefun Road intersection to Ilo River).

“These projects have already begun in earnest. The construction of the 181 roads earmarked across the 57 local councils, which is now an annual ritual of this Government will commence anytime soon and many more too numerous to mention.

“The will and commitment of the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration is to ensure that all these projects are completed before 2019. But the possibility of achieving such will require taxable citizens of the State who have not been paying their taxes to start doing so.

“This administration is grateful to Lagosians who have supported the Government particularly in the discharge of their civic responsibility through payment of taxes. That is the oil that keeps the engine and wheels of government moving smoothly.

“But when there are no resources, these laudable projects would be stalled. No government in the world can achieve its set out objectives without funds and these funds are available largely from what residents pay as taxes. It is therefore expedient that taxes should be paid correctly as at when due”, he said.

He said that some of the major projects that have been completed so far including the Abule Egba and Ajah flyovers, the Aboru Abesan Link Bridge, Ago Palace Way, Ajasa Command Road, network of roads in Ogudu and Epe, construction of the DNA Forensic Centre, among many others, were as a result of the tax payers money which according to him, the State Government judiciously utilized to make life more comfortable for the people.

Man brutally shot and stabbed future mother-in-law to death then went out to dinner with his fianc?e and her father?
An Ohio man has been arrested for brutally stabbing and shooting his future mother-in-law to death. Jeffrey Scullin Jr, 20, is said to have shot and stabbed Melinda Pleskovic to death on the night of October 23 before joining the victim’s unsuspecting husband for dinner at an Applebee’s, where his bride worked as a waitress.
According to Police reports, Scullin later called 911 to report finding Pleskovic, 49, lying dead in a pool of blood and even acted as a pallbearer at the woman’s funeral, three days before he was arrested for her murder.
Scullin was arrested after police searched his truck and found a tactical knife with traces of Pleskovic’s blood on it. More blood was found on the inside passenger door handle of the 2002 Chevy pickup truck.
The suspect was arraigned last Friday in Cleveland on charges including aggravated murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence in the October 23 slaying of the popular school teacher and married mother-of-three. He did not enter a plea.
A judge set his bond at $1million. Scullin’s next court appearance is scheduled for November 13.
