Divorced female lawyer calls for the abolishment of bride price in Zimbabwe (photos)

Divorced female lawyer calls for the abolishment of bride price in Zimbabwe
A female lawyer in Zimbabwe, Priccilar Vengesai, has filed a lawsuit in their country's highest court, demanding the abolishment of bride price locally known as lobola. Priccilar in the court papers, described the payment of bride price as an outdated practice that reduces women to mere "properties". She believes that if the custom is maintained, the families of both the bride and groom should pay lobola in the interest of gender equality.
Prisccilar, who is a divorcee and intends to marry once the court grants her wish, said
I did not participate in the pegging of the lobola price. I was never given a chance to ask for the justification of the amounts which were paid. This whole scenario reduced me to a property whereby a price tag was put on me by my uncles and my husband paid. This demoralised me and automatically subjected me to my husband’s control since I would always feel that I was purchased. I belong to the Shona tribe and I intend to enter into marriage as soon as this matter is concluded. Under the Shona culture, lobola must be paid for a woman before the marriage is acceptable in the family and the society. In scenarios where lobola is not paid, parents and relatives of the bride would not allow the parties to legalise their marriage under the Marriage Act. The society for which lobola was envisaged no longer exists and the continued use of the practice in modern industrialised society exacerbates gender inequities without providing the social benefits traditionally associated with lobola. The pre-colonial community in which lobola originated cannot be reproduced in the current Zimbabwe.  Greedy parents were now abusing the practice for unjustified enrichment. The original purpose and meaning of lobola has been fundamentally altered by the introduction of a cash economy in Zimbabwe, by urbanisation and by the breakthrough of agrarian communal ties. As a result, the original purposes of lobola have, in many cases, been subsumed by moths of greed and enrichment on the part of the brides’ families. In a nutshell, a woman is paid for simply because she is a woman and a husband pays for a wife because he is a man. This amounts to discrimination based on gender and sex,” she said.

Photos: Elderly women bare their breasts in support of the Benue state anti-open grazing law

Photos: Elderly women bare their breasts in support of the Benue state anti-open grazing law
No fewer than 2000 women in Benue State, some of them elderly women with their breasts open, staged protest on the streets of Makurdi, Benue state, in support of the newly enacted anti-open grazing law of the state. Some of the elderly women came out without wearing any bra.

The state government on Wednesday implemented the law that bans herdsmen from indiscriminate grazing in the state. The herdsmen have however vowed to resist the law.

Recall that many lives have been lost and properties destroyed following series of clash between community members and herdsmen after the cows managed by the herdsmen destroyed the farmlands of some community members.

'Igbos will vote massively for President Buhari in 2019' ex-Abia state governor, Orji Uzor Kalu predicts

A former Abia State governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, says Igbos will vote massively for President Buhari in the 2019 election. Kalu said this when he appeared as a guest on Arise TV.

' APC has come to stay in the south-east. Buhari’s contest in 2019 is not only for himself but for the south-east. After Buhari’s eight years, nobody in Nigeria can tell us that our region cannot produce the president. Majority of the Igbo people will massively support Buhari in 2019. They did not support him in 2015. But in 2019 they will massively vote for him. I am passing a vote of confidence on him because he has integrity. I am not the only one passing a vote of confidence on Buhari, the APC governors just endorsed him for a second term, the World Bank is supporting what he is doing, so also is the EU, including other powerful world leaders.” he said
Kalu who defected to APC in November 2016, said he did so because of the personality of President Buhari.
“I will add a lot of value to the APC in the south-east. I have been in the opposition for 10 years now. I joined Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) since 2006. But I joined APC because of Buhari. I joined because of his integrity so as to help grow the party in the south-east'.

Remarkable Osama bin Laden home movies released by CIA for first time give glimpse of family life of world's most wanted man

Remarkable Osama bin Laden home movies released by CIA for first time give glimpse of family life of world
Some home movies seized from Osama bin Laden's compound have been released and they give an interesting glimpse into the family life of the world's most wanted man.

The home videos have been released by the CIA six-and-a-half years after a Seal Team stormed his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan and killed him in May 2011.

One would expect that the family life of a man who masterminded the 9/11 attacks on New York would be abnormal, but contrary to expectations, the videos show a normal and happy family with happy children playing and running around, and also animals.

Clips from one of the videos shows young children playing on swings and a slide in a court yard, while others show them playing at home and one in which a boy recites sentences in Arabic. In another scene an old man appears to show two young men how to shoot a toy gun. There is a lso a video showing a baby calf being nursed by a cow and then hens and roosters wandering in a farm yard.
But the videos also include a first shot of an adult Hamza bin Laden, who is expected to rise to prominence as a jihadist and has already featured on Al Qaeda audio clips. In one video he is seen at his wedding.

The CIA released the huge cache of files recovered from bin Laden's computers after he was killed. The 470,000 files also include videos including explicit executions alongside ringtones for his phone and cartoons such as Tom and Jerry - and Lucien Freud's portrait of the Queen.
The CIA also recovered bin Laden's personal journal, which includes an entry the day before his death, among more than 18,000 documents, while there are approximately 79,000 audio and image files. Among the documents is a military guide to guerrilla warfare, apparently issued by the US Marine Corps and a Word document called 'Ruling on Fighting Americans Outside Iraq'.
But the more bizarre files found on his computer are a lot of Tom and Jerry cartoons and various children's films - including Ice Age and Chicken Little - and, with obvious irony, a documentary called 'Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?'. The jarring list of video files include titles as disparate as 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' and 'A mortar attack upon al-Dowra police station in Baghdad'.

In press releases that accompany the cache of materials recovered in the raid on May 2, 2011, the CIA said the release is an effort to further enhance public understanding of Al-Qaeda. The CIA also say that there are files from the collection that remain unreleased, which include pornography, copyrighted materials, and files that "directly damage efforts to keep the nation secure".
The release of 470,000 new files were authorised by CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
Pompeo said : "Today’s release of recovered al-Qa‘ida letters, videos, audio files and other materials provides the opportunity for the American people to gain further insights into the plans and workings of this terrorist organization. CIA will continue to seek opportunities to share information with the American people consistent with our obligation to protect national security."
The CIA says the documents also provide insights into 'the origins of fissures that exist today between al-Qa‘ida and ISIS' as well as strategic, doctrinal and religious disagreements within al-Qaeda and its allies; and hardships that al-Qaeda faced at the time of Bin Laden’s death."
The entire collection has been available to the US Intelligence Community and Department of Defense organizations for years. The Office of Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) previously released documents from the collection in May 2015, March 2016, and January 2017. It seeks to provide material relevant to understanding the plans and workings of terrorist organizations.

Photos: NDLEA destroys 14 metric tonnes of prohibited drugs in Oyo State

Photos: NDLEA destroys 14 metric tonnes of prohibited drugs in Oyo State
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has destroyed 14.13 metric tons of prohibited drugs in Ibadan, Oyo State, South West Nigeria.
The drugs which were destroyed in the full glare of the general public were intercepted by Oyo State Command of the Agency over a two-year period.

Photos: NDLEA destroys 14 metric tonnes of prohibited drugs in Oyo State

According to Omolade Faboyede, Oyo State Commander of the Agency, the drugs consisted of 14, 127.705 kilograms of Cannabis sativa, 40.601 kilograms of Psychotropic substances, 56.05 grams of Cocaine and 0.8 grams of Heroin. She noted that the public destruction coming two years after a similar exercise took place in the State was an indication that the illicit drug trade is not about to stop in the State and that more efforts was required by all stakeholder to counter the trend. She recalled that in 2014, the Agency destroyed 20, 784.596 kilograms of the illicit substances in Oyo State.

Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Col. Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (Rtd.) noted at the event that the exercise was to ensure public safety because confiscated drugs still remained a threat even in custody. According to him, aside from sending strong signals to criminal drug entrepreneurs that their deadly commodities are only worth the ashes, “the public destruction of the exhibits is to increase public confidence in NDLEA’s work.” “It is indeed good to be transparent and accountable to the public by showing that the drugs seized and exhibited in court and subsequently ordered for destruction are the real drugs and not substituted with any other substance”, the Chairman maintained.

He decried the indiscriminate cultivation of Cannabis within the Southwest in spite of its numerous socio-economic and security consequences.

“As a result of Cannabis cultivation, it has become increasingly difficult to find virgin forests. We are now faced with deforestation and soil degradation because of the operations of Cannabis farmers, felling invaluable pristine trees in sight to pave room for the cultivation of the illicit crops. Worse still, they engage the under-aged who ordinarily should be in school to tend their illicit Cannabis farms, thereby robbing them opportunity to develop as good citizens”, the Chairman revealed.

Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi who received the NDLEA Chairman in audience in Government House before the public burning exercise, noted that the State Government is more determined to ensure that its anti-Cannabis cultivation policy is enforced to the letter.

According to the Governor,

“it is the Policy of Oyo State Government to confiscate any Cannabis farm land and hand over the land to international investors to transform it into an economically generative venture. All the labourers on the seized Cannabis farm land will be recruited by the legitimate investors.”

The Governor urged all the Local Government Chairmen and traditional rulers to be mindful of the activities in the forests under their jurisdiction as they would be made to answers questions upon discovery of any illegal farms within their domain.

The public destruction exercise in Ibadan brings to 34 metric tons the total quantity of drugs publicly destroyed by NDLEA since this year. In July 2017, the Agency destroyed 20 metric tons of drugs in Abuja, FCT.

One year after, all is not well between Iyanya and Don Jazzy's Mavin records (photos)

LIB Exclusive: One year after, all is not well between Iyanya and Don Jazzy
As you read this, all is not well between Iyanya and Don Jazzy's Mavin records. Its barely One year after he was unveiled as a Mavin record artiste but the last few months has seen the realtionship between both parties deteriorate terribly and its not getting better.

Iyanya’s relationship with Mavin was confirmed by Don Jazzy on October 31, 2016 via an Instagram post that reads “SMD is pleased to welcome @Iyanya to the Mavin Family. Pls join us to welcome him & let the world known that we #Up2Sumting. #MavinActivated”

One year after there are visible cracks in the relationship between them and according to reliable inside sources 'they are both fed up with the arrangement'.

For starters, Iyanya who is also signed with Temple Company was treated to a soiree by close friends when he clocked 31 on Tuesday, October 31. The close-knitted event held at Crust and Cream, Victoria Island and noticeably, Mavin Records and its representatives were missing in the gathering.

That’s not all, his birthday went unnoticed by the label as its their custom via social media. A quick look at Mavin Records official social media platforms did not show any recognition of the singer’s birthday apart from a late post from Don Jazzy.

Another inside source tells LIB that 'The record label has not had a particularly great year. Most of the Mavin output has been poor apart from perhaps Tiwa Savage, Reekado and Johnny Drille'.

Efforts to get comments from both camps at the time of this report didn't yield results.
