Mother who killed her 3-year-old son "because he looked like his father" has been jailed for 33 years

Mother who killed her 3-year-old son "because he looked like his father" has been jailed for 33 years

A mother who killed her three-year-old son "because he looked like his father" has been sentenced to at least 33 years in jail, while her partner has been given a prison sentence of at least 30 years.
The toddler, known as Joseph, suffered extreme abuse at the hands of his mother and step-father. After months of abuse, the child died from extensive and horrific injuries to his head and body in the town of Oberon in New South Wales' central west.
The child's 43-year-old mother and her 48-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were found guilty of murder in the New South Wales Supreme Court in April. The court was told the mother admitted to police that she had thoughts about killing her son because she "just didn't connect with him".
Joseph's mother and stepfather did horrible things to him. In one instance, his eyes were taped closed with duct tape because he was staring at them. He had been hit with a spoon and, in another instance, forced into an esky cooler for ice baths in a bid to bring out his bruises. In the days before his death, Joseph's mother jammed his head in a wardrobe door and punched him in the head.
"Don't get me wrong I did love that boy ... but there was a part of me that hated him ... because he looked like his father, because he's his father's child," she told police.
Detective Sergeant Joel Fawkner from NSW Police said the level of torture Joseph sufferes was "very traumatic" and "inhumane". He said officers had quit the force after being involved with the "dreadful" case and added, "you can't unsee what we've seen."
In sentencing, Justice Peter Johnson said: "Rather than nurturing her son, LN punished him as if he was in some way responsible for the sins of his father. This was a grotesque and cruel feature of LN's conduct towards her son."
Justice Johnson said Joseph was vulnerable.
"By the time of the final assault causing death I am satisfied that Joseph had been worn down physically and psychologically by the assaults upon him so as to render him more vulnerable to the final and fatal attack," he said.
Speaking to Joseph's extended family who were in court, Justice Johnson told them it was not their fault.
He said: "In my view the extended family members should not in any way blame themselves for what happened. It is a measure of their decency and compassion that they have reacted to these events in this way. Each of them provided care, love and support to Joseph while he lived with them in Sydney for several years."
Justice Johnson said the jail terms were "de facto life sentences".
"If Joseph had continued to be raised with the extended family in Sydney in 2014 there is every reason to believe he would have grown into a fine young man," he said.
Outside court, the dead child's uncle said he was pleased with the sentences.
"The judge dished out the appropriate punishment, as far as I can see," he said.
The uncle said he did not believe the child's mother and her partner had an understanding of what they had done.
"All through the court process, I haven't seen any remorse or any behaviour that would suggest they were upset by this whole ordeal," he said.

The Hollywood Reporter lists Mo Abudu as one of the 25 most powerful women in global TV

The Hollywood Reporter lists Mo Abudu as one of the 25 most powerful women in global TV

Founder and CEO of EbonyLife TV recognised as an influential woman in the media industry for the second time
The Hollywood Reporter has released its annual list of the ‘25 Most Powerful Women in Global Television’ and Mo Abudu is the only African woman listed, amongst those from North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australasia.
The category recognises female executives from around the globe who are rewriting the rules of TV, during a time when ‘women have to work twice as hard for the same recognition’ as men. The article describes Abudu as a woman who ‘has been at the forefront of media innovation on the continent’ and whose goal for the coming year is ‘to successfully produce Africa's first sci-fi TV series’. The first time she was included in this list was in 2013, immediately after the launch of EbonyLife TV.
Since those early days, EbonyLife TV has created over 4,000 hours of original, high-quality content, including landmark drama series The Governor, Sons of the Caliphate and Fifty (the series), along with the first pan-African talk show, Moments, with different versions hosted in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. EbonyLife Films made its debut in 2015 at the 59th BFI London Film Festival with Fifty, the highest-grossing Nollywood movie that year. In 2016, EbonyLife co-produced The Wedding Party, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and went on to become the biggest movie in the history of Nigerian cinema.
Ms. Abudu does not take the recognition from the renowned entertainment magazine for granted. “It's an honour and privilege to be acknowledged again by The Hollywood Reporter. I am proud to represent Nigeria and the thousands of women in Africa, striving to make their mark in a male-dominated industry,” she said.
The Hollywood Reporter publishes its list of Most Powerful Women in Global Television annually, with luminaries deemed by its editors to have made a significant impact on what audiences are watching worldwide and how women are represented on TV.

Photos: Customs intercepts 27 Toyota Hilux vans worth N432m in Abuja

The Nigeria Customs Services (NCS) has intercepted 27 Toyota Hilux vans suspected to have been smuggled into the country.
The vehicles valued at N432 million, were intercepted along Kubwa expressway in Abuja over non payment of custom duty.
Briefing newsmen at the Customs headquarters on Friday, the Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) Enforcement, Investigation, and Inspection, Aminu Dangaladima said based on credible intelligence, operatives of the Federal Compliance Team evacuated the vehicles from two car stands.
"On Wednesday 10th October 2017, based on credible intelligence, operatives of NCS Compliance Team went to two open car stands along Kubwa express-way in the Federal Capital Territory and evacuated 27 Toyota Hilux pick-up vehicles suspected to be smuggled into the Country. These vehicles have estimated duty paid value (DPV) of over N432,000,000 million.
"We urge the owners of these vehicles to come forward with valid Customs clearance documents otherwise they will be liable to Seizure and subsequent Forfeiture to the Federal Government in-line with laws of the land.
"You will recall that last month, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd) while briefing on interception of 18 exotic vehicles, 13 of which were bullet proof said that the Service under his leadership will enforce the powers given in the Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) effectively.
"For the avoidance of doubt, what we are doing is in-line with the provisions of Sections 147 of Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Cap 45, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 (power to search premises), Section 158 of CEMA, Cap 45 Laws of Federation of Nigeria (power to patrol freely).
"It must also be understood that being in possession of smuggled items is an offence under Section 3 of Customs and Excise (special penal and other provision) Act Cap 47 Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004.
"Let me seize this opportunity to inform you that we are making progress on investigation in the illegal arms importation. More arrests have been made and the CGC will be on the entourage of Mr. President to Turkey for sideline bilateral meeting with the Turkish Customs Authority. This is with the aim to permanently deal and put an end to such deadly importation coming from Turkey.
NCS under the on-going reforms has continued to improve in all aspects, especially in the areas of suppression of smuggling. The idea that one can comply with laws of other countries and contravene Nigerian Laws on arrival here can no longer be tolerated.
"NCS will continue to contribute its quota to National economic development and security.
Finally, let me commend the media for your continuous support. NCS appreciates and will always count on you to inform and educate the general public on the activities of the Nigeria Customs Service."

Trump to stop paying Obamacare subsidies for the poor

Trump to stop paying Obamacare subsidies for the poor
President Donald Trump plans to end a key set of Obamacare subsidies that helped lower-income Americans pay for health care.
The White House made it known that the Trump Administration would end the Affordable Care Act's cost-sharing reduction payments. The Act particularly helps people earning between 100 percent and 250 percent of the poverty level pay for the insurance and health care they get.
The dramatic move by the Trump administration raises questions about the law's future. Health care experts have warned that not paying the subsidies could send the health insurance exchanges into turmoil.
The payments, which started under the Obama administration, had been continued by President Trump but on Thursday the White House said since there was no appropriation for it, "the Government cannot lawfully make the cost-sharing reduction payments."
The White House said in a statement: "The bailout of insurance companies through these unlawful payments is yet another example of how the previous administration abused taxpayer dollars and skirted the law to prop up a broken system. Congress needs to repeal and replace the disastrous Obamacare law and provide real relief to the American people."
The announcement is part of Trump's aggressive push to dismantle aspects of Obama's signature health law after several failed attempts by Congress to repeal it earlier this year. In a series of tweets Friday morning, Trump called on Democrats to reach out to him to "fix" the law, which he called a "broken mess."
Trump tweeted: "The Democrats ObamaCare is imploding. Massive subsidy payments to their pet insurance companies has stopped. Dems should call me to fix!"
Trump to stop paying Obamacare subsidies for the poor
The news was not received well by Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill. In a joint statement, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called the move "a spiteful act of vast, pointless sabotage."
The leaders said in a statement: "Sadly, instead of working to lower health costs for Americans, it seems President Trump will singlehandedly hike Americans' health premiums. Make no mistake about it, Trump will try to blame the Affordable Care Act, but this will fall on his back and he will pay the price for it."
But GOP Rep. Jim Jordan, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, defended the President's decision to CNN's Chris Cuomo on CNN's "New Day" Friday morning.
"These (cost sharing reduction) payments are in fact illegal. The President said he is no longer going to engage in making these payments, so let's move forward and do what we should have done a long time ago," he said, later adding, "Obamacare is a mess and we need to replace the whole thing, repeal the whole thing."
In a statement issued shortly after Thursday's announcement, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., said the decision "preserves a monumental affirmation of Congress's authority and the separation of powers."
"Obamacare has proven itself to be a fatally flawed law, and the House will continue to work with Trump administration to provide the American people a better system," Ryan said.

Landlord, children stab tenant to death, two days to his wedding in Imo

There was tension Thursday in Onumonu Street, Owerri, Imo State, when a Landlord, Paul Oparaugo, his wife and children, stabbed his tenant, Udochukwu Iwuoha to death.
.
The victim, who was said to be the only male child of his parents, was stabbed severally by the furious Landlord and members of his family until he gave up the ghost.
.
Iwuoha, who hailed from Agbaja, Imo state, was to traditionally wed his fiancée on today. They fled immediately after committing the dastardly act to escape the wrath of the mob that had gathered.
.
A neighbour revealed that, “The incident happened on Wednesday. Udochukwu had told Paul Nwachukwu, stop rearing chickens behind his apartment. He told him that the smell and noises of the chickens were affecting his health; but the family took his observation as an insult.
.
He came back from work around 7pm on Wednesday and met a dead fowl on his entrance door and he went to ask his Landlord who operates a poultry farm close to the victim’s window.
.
The Landlord came out with a machete and cut the boy on the shoulder before his wife and children rushed out and started stabbing the boy with kitchen knives. A neighbour, Godspower, who came to rescue Udochukwu, was stabbed in one of his hands.”

Buhari asked us to focus on northern Nigeria — World Bank

The President of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim, said on Thursday that the bank had concentrated on the northern region of Nigeria in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s request.
.
According to Punchng, Kim and the Managing Director, International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who spoke at separate press conferences in Washington DC, U.S, also advised Buhari to invest in things that would enhance economic growth.
.
Kim said, “You know, in my very first meeting with President Buhari he said specifically that he would like us to shift our focus to the northern region of Nigeria and we’ve done that. Now, it has been very difficult. The work there has been very difficult. “I think Nigeria, of course, has suffered from the dropping oil prices.
.
I think things are just now getting better. But the conversation we need to have with Nigeria, I think, is in many ways related to the theme that I brought to the table just this past week, which is investment in human capital. The percentage of the Gross Domestic Product that Nigeria spends on healthcare is less than one percent.”
.
He added, “Despite that, there is so much turbulence in the northern part of the country, and there is the hit that was taken from the drop in the oil prices. Nigeria has to think ahead and invest in its people.
.
Investing in the things that will allow Nigeria to be a thriving, rapidly growing economy in the future is what the country has to focus on right now.” Kim also said, “Focusing on the northern part of Nigeria, we hope that as commodity prices stabilise and oil prices come back up, the economy will grow a bit more.
But very, very much important is the need to focus on what the drivers of growth in the future will be.” According to the World Bank boss, the bank will invest in human capital in other parts of Africa in order to prepare the continent for the next phase of growth.

'Those criticizing President Buhari’s request for World Bank to focus on the north are ignorant' Femi Adesina

Senior Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, says those who are criticizing President Buhari for asking the World Bank to focus on the Northeast are ignorant.
World Bank president Jim Yong Kim, at a press conference in the US yesterday, disclosed that at his first meeting with president Buhari, he was advised to focus his work on the Northeast.Read Femi Adesina's press statement reacting to the mixed reactions that have trailed the report below...
' Those who specialize in a deliberate twisting of information have wailed and raged endlessly on the news item credited to the World Bank Group President, Jim Yong Kim, who disclosed in Washington DC, United States of America, that President Muhammadu Buhari had requested a concentration of the Bank's intervention efforts in the northern part of Nigeria, particularly in the North-east. The ignorant and mischievous people, who twist everything for their vile purposes, are making it seem that it was a calculated attempt to give the North an unfair advantage over other parts of Nigeria. The truth of the matter is that President Buhari, right from his first week in office in June, 2015, had reached out to the G-7 in Germany that Nigeria needed help to rebuild the North-east, which had been terribly devastated by insurgency. He said the country would prefer help in terms of rebuilding of infrastructure, rather than cash donation, which may end up being misappropriated. In concert with Governors of the region, a comprehensive list of needed repairs was sent to the G-7 leaders. Also, during a trip to Washington in 2015, and many other engagements that followed, President Buhari sought the help of the World Bank in rebuilding the beleaguered North-east, which was then being wrested from the stranglehold of a pernicious insurgency. It was something always done in the open, and which reflected the President's concern for the region. Those ululating over the disclosure by the President of the World Bank should be a bit reflective, and consider the ravages that the North-east has suffered since 2009, when the Boko Haram insurgency started. Schools, hospitals, homes, entire villages, towns, cities, bridges, and other public utilities have been blown up, laid waste, and lives terminated in excess of 20,000, while widows and orphans littered the landscape. The humanitarian crisis was in monumental proportions. President Buhari simply did what a caring leader should do. He took the battle to the insurgents, broke their backs, and then sought for help to rebuild, so that the people could have their lives back. Should that then elicit the negative commentary that has trailed the disclosure from the World Bank? Not at all, except from insidious minds. President Buhari has a pan-Nigerian mandate, and he will discharge his duties and responsibilities in like manner. Any part of the country that requires special attention would receive it, irrespective of primordial affinities, which narrow-minded people have not been able to live above. This President will always work in the best interest of all parts of the country at all times. Let ethnic warriors sheathe their swords'.
