Photos: INTERPOL seizes tonnes of illicit medicines in West Africa

More than 420 tonnes of illicit pharmaceutical and medical products have been seized in an operation in West Africa coordinated by INTERPOL.
Operation Heera (15 May – 17 June) involved some 1,150 law enforcement officials from police, customs and health regulatory agencies in seven countries – Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger, and Togo – who sought to dismantle illicit factories and supply chains.
Raids on markets, shops, pharmacies, warehouses, vehicles and illicit factories led to the seizure of more than 41 million pills and 13,000 cartons of illicit pharmaceutical and medical goods worth approximately USD 21.8 million. Some 150 people were either arrested or placed under investigation.
Seized goods included health supplements, herbal products, analgesics, antibiotics, antimalarial medicine, vitamins, mineral supplements, as well as printing and packaging equipment.
“Initiatives such as Operation Heera not only aim to protect the public from potentially unsafe goods, they also help to dismantle illegal networks which are often connected to other forms of serious crime,” said INTERPOL’s Executive Director of Police Services, Tim Morris.
“Through its global network and policing capabilities, INTERPOL’s role is vital in shaping a coordinated response in regional and international operations. Collaboration is key to our collective success,” added Mr Morris.
As part of the operation, 100 tonnes of illicit medicines concealed in trucks carrying fruit were seized in Koro, Benin. The trucks allegedly originated from Guinea and were destined for countries throughout the region.
"The police in Benin is committed to fighting illicit trade because of the dangers this type of crime poses to consumers and the need to identify and disrupt the criminal groups behind it. Our country encourages and supports the efforts of INTERPOL in fighting organized crime through initiatives such as Operation Heera," said the Head of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Benin, Médard Woudecon.
Oumar Aimé Toe, Secretary-General of Côte d’Ivoire’s Committee Against Illicit Trafficking and Counterfeit Medicines (COTRAMED), said:
“In addition to dismantling illicit factories and criminal networks, the operation played an important role in alerting the public as to the risk of fake and illicit medicines. The police, gendarmerie, customs, health and judicial authorities in Côte d’Ivoire will remain steadfast in combating pharmaceutical crime.

Amir Khan's estranged wife Faryal announces that she's pregnant with baby number two

British boxer, Amir Khan's estranged wife has revealed that she is pregnant with baby number two.
Faryal Makhdoom Khan shared the good news on Twitter last night.

Her tweet comes after it emerged the couple have turned to an Islamic sharia law expert in a last-ditch attempt to save their troubled marriage.
Before she shared the good news, the beauty blogger delivered a jab to her boxer hubby by praising Conor McGregor for his devotion to his partner of over eight years.
Amir Khan' and his estranged wife Faryal Makhdoom who already have a three-year-old daughter Lamaisah Khan, are currently battling to save their marriage after they dragged each other on Twitter over cheating claims.
Earlier this month, Khan accused his American wife of having an affair with heavyweight rival Anthony Joshua and announce that he was divorcing her
'Left my family and friends for this Faryal. I'm not hurt but another fighter. I'm making it public. You getting the divorce #Golddigger.'
But Faryal hit back minutes later, claiming her husband left his family because they had 'robbed' him and telling him to 'stop making false things up'.
She branded him a '30-year-old baby', and also went on to accuse him of sleeping with prostitutes and being a bad role model.
After getting Anthony Joshua involved in his family drama, he later apologised and said there was 'no truth' to his claims after the British/Nigerian boxer threatened to sue him.

The agitation of IPOB and MASSOB is valid agitation, but their methodology is wrong - Ojukwu's son, Emeka

Emeka Ojukwu, son of the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, says the agitation of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is valid but he is against their methodology.

In an interview with PUNCH, Ojukwu said their agitation must be devoid of violence and hate speech.
“The agitation of IPOB and MASSOB is a valid agitation. The only thing I hold against them is their methodology. But for somebody to fight for self-determination I do not see anything wrong in that. It is like a marriage; there are times the situation will be rosy and pleasant, there are times there will be some upheavals,” he said.
“So, we must give room for those things. No one should say those boys shouldn’t talk. They are allowed to talk. But what I am against or what I frown on is their taking over the road because when it comes to roads, there is what we call ‘access.’ If a Yoruba man wants to go to Port Harcourt (Rivers state) or Aba (Abia state), you should not try to block the road, saying you want to vent your spleen because of some certain grievances. You’re obstructing him and if you succeed in doing that, you’re proving that there is no government and there is insecurity. If there is a need to demonstrate or do whatever, then they should go to a stadium, book the venue, go to the police to get a public permit to hold a demonstration and you can all stay in the stadium, have (a protest by) candlelight and get the media to cover the protest – that’s enough of a message to pass across to the world.
“It is better than recruiting a group of young children from the universities, indoctrinating them and pushing them to get on the roads to do whatever they think they like; acting that way doesn’t help anybody. Their agitation must be devoid of violence. Any agitation must be devoid of hate speech. The reality is that nobody has a monopoly of hate speech. Everybody should be civil in relating with their fellow men. We must eschew hate speech to avoid bad consequences.”
According to him, his father would be proud of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB, for “bearing the torch”.  He said his problem with Kanu is his “language” which heats up the polity.
“Well, he’d be proud. He was not a jealous person he was always very free. If you remember exactly what he said: ‘I hold the torch, but my problem is that I am looking around for a young man to pass on the torch.’ So, if Nnamdi Kanu shows that he is the person that will bear the torch, I don’t have any problem with that,” he said.
“But my problem with him is (that) the language being used (by him) is not refined the language is heating up the polity. I pray that the meeting the South-East senators had with him will ensure that caution is exercised in the language used. I am a party to that. In fact, that (language used) was the dividing line between the two of us it started when I said ‘don’t insult people’ and all that but he stuck to that. I didn’t want that to happen because I have a name to protect. I think Nigerians should love one another and agitate within the confines of the law. I should also add that we know the history of Nigeria; when did we start to feel bad about one another? If we come to the conclusion that things were going on well until 1960 or 1963, then, why can’t we go back to that point and start from there?” he concluded.
