Yahoo in trouble over data breach

Yahoo faces legal battle in U.S.
Yahoo faces legal battle in U.S.
(Reuters/NAN) U.S. judge said Yahoo must face nationwide litigation brought on behalf of well over one billion users who said their personal information was compromised in three massive data breaches, Media reports on Thursday.
Wednesday night’s decision from U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California, was a setback for efforts by Verizon billion Communications Inc, which paid 4.76 dollars for Yahoo’s Internet business in June, to limit potential liability.
The breaches occurred between 2013 and 2016, but Yahoo was slow to disclose them, waiting more than three years to reveal the first.
Revelations about the scope of the cyber attacks prompted Verizon to lower its purchase price for the company.
In a 93-page decision, Koh rejected Yahoo’s contention that breach victims lacked standing to sue, and said it could pursue some breach of contract and unfair competition claims.
“All plaintiffs have alleged a risk of future identity theft, in addition to loss of value of their personal identification information,” the judge wrote.
Koh said that some plaintiffs also alleged they had spent money to thwart future identity theft or that fraudsters had misused their data.
Others, meanwhile, could have changed passwords or canceled their accounts to stem losses had Yahoo not delayed disclosing the breaches, the judge said.
While many claims were dismissed, Koh said that the plaintiffs could amend their complaint to address her concerns.
“We believe it to be a significant victory for consumers, and willaddress the deficiencies the court pointed out,” John Yanchunis, a lawyer for the plaintiffs who chairs an executive committee overseeing the case, said in an interview.
“It’s the biggest data breach in the history of the world.”
Verizon spokesman Bob Varettoni said the New York-based company declined to comment on pending litigation.
Yahoo is now part of a Verizon unit called Oath.
In court papers, Yahoo had argued that the breaches were “a triumph of criminal persistence” by a “veritable ’who’s who’ of cybercriminals,” and that no security system is hack-proof.
On March 15, the U.S. Department of Justice charged two officers of the Russian Federal Security Service and two hackers in connection with the second breach in late 2014.
The August 2013 breach affected more than one billion accounts, while the 2014 breach affected more than 500 millionn and a third breach occurred in 2015 and 2016.
The case is In re: Yahoo Inc Customer Data Security Breach Litigation, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 16-md-02752.

Hate speeches: NBC impose heavy sanctions on broadcast stations

Malam Is’haq Modibbo-Kawu, Director General of NBC on return of N10bn by EFCC to the commission
By Emmanuel Acha
Ahead of the forthcoming elections, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) says it will impose heavy sanctions on broadcast stations which promote hate speeches.
The Director General of the commission, Mr Is’haq Kawu, said this on Thursday in Enugu at the inauguration of Family Love FM 99.9 at the European Quarters in Ngwo.
Kawu was represented at the event by a director in the commission, Mr Armstrong Idachaba.
He said that the commission had taken note of hate speeches from some parts of the country, adding that it would guard against its infiltration in the broadcast industry.
“We are already seeing signs of hate speeches among Nigerians and would not tolerate it in the broadcast industry as we prepare for the 2019 elections.
“Our broadcast stations should rather be used to engender tolerance, mutual respect as well as promote unity among Nigerians,” he said.
Kawu said that the broadcast industry had witnessed tremendous growth in the last few years owing to the complete deregulation of the sector.
He said that there were about 800 radio stations in the country, adding that what was expected of them was healthy competition.
“We now have a very competitive private sector that is experiencing great growth.
“Competition in the sector now has multiplier effects in the country in terms of job creation and education.
“The competition among the various players in the industry must continue to be friendly, ‘’ Kawu said.
Earlier in an address of welcome, the Group Managing Director of Multimesh Broadcasting Company Ltd., Mr Godfrey Ohuabunwa, said that company was conceived 32 years ago.
Ohuabunwa said that the station would usher in a new dimension to broadcasting in the South East Zone of Nigeria.
“Our passion for broadcasting has its roots on the need to affect the society that is virtually derailing from basic tenets of upright living and morality.
“This decay has affected our society much so that there seem not to be value for life, stewardship and right standing with God,” he said.
He said that programmes of the station were structured toward the improvement of family values and standards.
Ohuabunwa appealed to regulators in the industry to provide a level playing ground and opportunities for private sector participation in the industry.
He also appealed to relevant government agencies to review downwards customs duties and taxes payable on communication and broadcast equipment for greater results.
“One of the problems which has continued to bedevil this industry is the cost of operations and roll out,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the company is also licensed as a private cable satellite broadcasting company and one of the biggest satellite distribution Pay TV companies.
It also has a radio station in Rivers, Abia and Abuja. (NAN)

Photos: Flood sacks 110,000 people in Makurdi

Governor Samuel Ortom surveys the damage done by the flood
By Emmanuel Antswen/Makurdi
The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said over 110,000 people in 24 communities including Makurdi were displaced by flood.
The Executive Secretary of the agency, Mr Boniface Ortese, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi on Wednesday that over 2, 769 households were also affected.
He explained that places affected included Achusa, Idye, Wurukum Market, Genabe, Industrial Layout, Demekpe, Wadata Market, Katungu, behind the Civil Service Commission, Agboughul-Wadata among others.
“In Achusa 200 houses were affected with 5,125 persons displaced. In Idye 217 houses were affected while 5,200 persons were displaced.
“Also, behind the Civil Service Commission 200 houses were submerged in flood and 5,777 persons were displaced.

“At Genabe, 200 houses were affected with 5,021 persons displaced, 218 houses around the Wurukum market were affected with 1,000 persons displaced, and at Wadata market150 houses were affected and 4,300 persons were displaced.
“Similarly at Industrial Layout, 69 houses were flooded and 4,310 persons displaced; Demekpe 111 houses were affected while 7,820 persons displaced,’’ the official said..
Ortese further said that 137 houses were flooded in Katungu with 6,031 persons displaced while at Agboughul-Wadata 201 houses were affected and 5,728 persons displaced.
He said that government was doing everything within its little resources to assist flood victims in the state.
Meanwhile, the state commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Mr Joseph Utsev has urged the Federal Government to include Benue among states to benefit from the N1.6 billion ecological intervention fund.
Utsev said that since 2013, the state had not received any ecological assistance from the Federal Government.
He said that if adequate budgetary provisions were made, many disasters may be mitigated since natural disasters could only be controlled.
A man wades through the water more than knee length
The commissioner said that dredging the River Benue would provide permanent solution to the recurring flood in the state.
“Benue Government is looking for ways in which River Benue can be dredged; this is because by dredging the river, majority of the water can be accommodated and thus, prevent future overflow.
“The ongoing research so far, shows that the preliminary study would cost about N8 billion while the main project would gulp about N300 billion.
“And this is where we need Federal Government financial intervention to execute the project, since the funds are much,’’ he said.
However, a cross section of Makurdi residents accused the Benue State Government of doing little to protect the citizens from flood disaster over the years.
A resident told NAN “since the 2012 flood disaster, government has done little to mitigate the situation apart from talking”
The resident said that the perennial flood disaster was an opportunity for some government officials to get free money and relief materials to divert.
Mr James Udam, a resident of Idye Village told NAN that for over twenty years of his stay in the village, government has done nothing to protect residents despite their cries.
Udam said that year in year out they have been affected by flood yet government keep making promises without any action.
“This is where we find ourselves in Benue. Government officials are rather happy that there is heavy flood disaster so as to get free funds and relief materials to divert.
“The same thing is again about to happen. The only thing the government has done so far is to make noise. Not a single culvert has been constructed to mitigate the situation since 2012,” he lamented
Also, Mrs Juliana Agbo, a resident of Achusa, told NAN that their situation was pathetic as they have no shelter.
According to her, government was yet to open camp for IDPs in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that government officials involved in emergency management are still awaiting the governor’s approval to open IDPs camps.
The Akume led administration awarded a N2.2 billion contract to CAD Nigeria Limited for the construction of water drainage channel that will control all the running waters down to River Benue but the project was abandoned.
Over 4000 households were submerged, property worth millions destroyed and scores died in the 2012 flood disaster.

“He is pledging one million dollars of personal money to the fund,” Sanders told reporters at a White House briefing.
Trump had assured of rapid response to Hurricane Harvey currently ravaging Texas.
Trump, in a series of tweets, noted that the devastating storm had been upgraded to a ‘Category 4’ storm by the National Hurricane Center.
“I have spoken w/ @GovAbbott of Texas and @LouisianaGov Edwards. Closely monitoring #HurricaneHarvey developments and here to assist as needed.”
“I encourage everyone in the path of #HurricaneHarvey to heed the advice and orders of their local and state officials.”
“Just arrived at Camp David, where I am monitoring the path and doings of Hurricane Harvey (as it strengthens to a Class 3). 125 MPH winds!”
“Storm turned Hurricane is getting much bigger and more powerful than projected. Federal Government is on site and ready to respond. Be safe!
“We will continue to monitor #HurricaneHarvey and the preparedness and response efforts of state, local and federal officials. I encourage people in the path of this dangerous storm to heed the advice and orders of their local and state officials,” Trump tweeted.
The National Hurricane Centre, in an advisory on Friday, warned Texans to prepare for “life-threatening flash flooding” especially around the Texas Gulf Coast.
“The National Hurricane Center has upgraded Hurricane Harvey to a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph and is moving northwest at a speed of 8 miles an hour.
“The storm is about 45 miles outside of Corpus Christi,” the Centre said in an advisory.
The storm was expected to make landfall near Corpus Christi late Friday or early Saturday morning, the National Weather Service said.
The National Weather Service in Corpus Christi issued a warning for southwestern Calhoun County in south Texas, urging residents to “TAKE COVER NOW!”
“Widespread destructive winds of 115 to 145 mph will spread across Calhoun County, Aransas County, Nueces County, San Patricio County, Refugio County, producing swaths of tornado-like damage.
“TAKE COVER NOW! Treat these imminent extreme winds as if a tornado was approaching and move immediately to the safe room in your shelter. Take action now to protect your life!” the service said in an advisory.
The service had also issued a warning on Friday saying that parts of Texas “may be uninhabitable” for weeks or months after Hurricane Harvey unleashes what could be the fiercest hurricane to hit the U.S. since 2005

First picture of devoted mother who drowned to save her 3-year-old daughter in Hurricane Harvey

A mother who drowned during floods in Texas has been identified as Collette Sulcer.
The 41-year-old was swept away by the strong currents in the Texas floods while trying to carry her daughter Jordyn to safety.
Rescuers found little Jordyn alive, clinging to her mother's lifeless body.
According to reports, the tragedy happened when the 41-year-old got stuck in Beaumont as she tried to flee rising waters in her car caused by Tropical Storm Harvey.

Police said Collette tried desperately to keep her daughter’s head above water. When she was found half a mile away from the scene, Jordyn was still clinging to her mother's floating body.
Carol Riley, a spokesperson for the Beaumont Police Department, said she ‘absolutely saved the child’s life’.
She said: ‘They were in the water for quite some time. The mother did the best she could to keep her child up over the water.
‘The baby also had a backpack that was helping her float on her back and she was holding on to her mom.’
Officials have confirmed the death toll from Harvey has risen to 31, including six family members – four of them children – whose bodies were pulled on Wednesday from a van that had been swept off a Houston bridge into a bayou.

Man fined for circulating wedding rumor about rapper Dr. Dre and former South Korean first lady

A South Korean court has fined a man for circulating a rumor online that rapper and businessman Dr. Dre was to marry the widow of a former South Korean President, Lee Hee-ho.
According to the Korea Times, Seoul Western District Court fined the man 5 million won ($4,400) on Friday following convictions for "cyber defamation" and "defamation against the deceased".
In January, the unidentified man had written on his blog that Lee Hee-ho, widow of late former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, was to wed Dr. Dre in order to launder the late Kim's slush funds.
Dr. Dre, also known as Andre Romelle Young, a founding member of the gangster rap group NWA, is one of the world's richest music stars after the sale of Beats Electronics, makers of high specification headphones, to Apple in 2015 for $3 billion.
Lee Hee-ho who's 95-years-old has remained a prominent figure in Korean politics since her husband's death in 2009.
It is unreported whether the former first lady is a fan of the rapper, but the pair never addressed the controversy.

The strange case of Kansas City’s serial killer who murdered 5 middle aged white men in the space of 1 year

On Tuesday, police arrested a Missouri man for the shooting deaths of 5 men who were total strangers to him.
For over a year, the series of execution-style murders baffled investigators and sent shock waves through Kansas City until 22-year-old Fredrick Demond Scott was arrested after he was linked forensically to a cigarette butt and an iced tea bottle recovered near one of the crime scenes.
Scott, of Kansas City, is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Steven Gibbons, 57, and John Palmer, 54. He is not charged in the other three deaths due to lack of evidence. All of the victims were middle aged white men between 54 and 67. Police say four of the five victims were shot in the head. Several were shot in the back of the head.
"They didn’t see it coming," Scott whispered under his breath to detectives.
None of the murders fit a pattern. Some of the men were shot in broad daylight while walking their dogs. At least 2 of the dogs stayed with their slain owners.
The first death was on August 19, 2016, but the investigators only caught a break in the case on August 13 this year after Scott killed his fifth and final victim. Scott, who didn’t own a car, followed Gibbons off a city bus and kept on walking behind him for a distance. He then crept up behind him and shot him in the head before turning around and boarding another city bus.
A surveillance camera at a nearby business panned away from the scene of the shooting at the time of the crime so detectives did not get a view of the murder as it happened. However, by the time the camera panned around again, it captured a man running from the scene and boarding a bus.
Police caught another break when a surveillance camera at a nearby gas station captured a clear image of the same man buying a bottle of iced tea before Gibbons’ murder. The suspect's photo was circulated among police and four days later they spotted a man fitting the description sitting on a wall and smoking a cigarette. They saw Scott throw the cigarette butt on the ground and they officers picked it up and sent it to a lab for DNA testing. WHen the result came back, the DNA from Scott’s cigarette butt matched DNA on the iced tea bottle found discarded near the scene of Gibbons’ murder.
When police arrested Scott, he admitted shooting Gibbons, but he claimed the gun went off as he took it out of his pocket. The motive for the serial killings is still a mystery but Scott reportedly told investigators that he was angry about the 2015 shooting death of his brother, Gerrod H. Woods, 23, who was killed during an armed robbery.
Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said the families have endured a difficult year since the murder of Scott’s first victim, John Palmer, who was found shot to death in a wooded area near the Indian Creek Trail on August 19, 2016.
Baker said: "To the families, there’s no motive that makes sense. There just isn’t."

Dad got stranded at his daughter’s university because of Hurricane Harvey, so he decided to follow her to class and torment her

This seems to be the first hilarious story to come out of the disastrous Hurricane Harvey.
The flood has messed with a lot of people’s travel plans this week. A dad, who was supposed to fly into Houston after dropping his daughter off at college, was stranded because of the Hurricane so he decided to make the most of his time by attending lectures with his daughter and embarrassing the heck out of her.
Omete Anassi posted a viral tweet showing his dad sitting in his sister's class for her first lecture.
"My pops can't fly back to Houston 'cause of the hurricane, so he going to grad school with my sister. She pissed," he wrote.
Anassi shared a screenshot of his father's conversation with them on their family group chat.
"In class called oral history @ new school. Kerubo behind me," the father wrote, sharing the hilarious selfie of him in class with his daughter.
His daughter then begs him in the group to leave her class and asks her mother for help.
"Get out before we start. Go. Mummy come get him," the daughter wrote.
Her brother's only response is "HAHAHAH POSTING EVERYWHERE."
"Seriously, he needs to leave now," the embarrassed daughter continues writing. "He's stayed for the intro and has a syllabus. And he won't leave. He's distracting me."
The tweet now has almost 100,000 likes and over 30,000 retweets. Another woman who is experiencing the same thing wrote that her mom also ended up stranded on her campus, so she's lounging in her room with a glass of wine.
"LITERALLY SAME. My mom was supposed to leave but she can't," she wrote with a photo of her mom in her room.
